Huskies Fall To USC On Early Strike

SEATTLE - A goal in the opening minutes proved to be the difference as the University of Southern California defeated Washington, 1-0, Friday night at Husky Soccer Field.
The Women of Troy (4-11-0, 1-5-0 Pac-12) struck in the fifth minute. A Husky foul set-up a free kick for USC 30 yards out on the left side. Brittany Kerridge played the ball in, where Elizabeth Eddy got on the end of her cross with a header that beat Husky keeper Jorde Lafontaine-Kussman. Eddy's third goal of the season was her first game-winner of 2011.
Washington's first clear chance of the match came in the 48th minute, when Jaclyn Softli earned a foul just outside the box. Lindsay Elston took the chance, firing a hard shot the deflected off the inside of the far post and out of the area.
The Huskies fought to the finish, earning a shot in the box with just a minute left. After pressing forward, Sarah Martinez got her foot on a loose ball in the box straight out from goal. But her attempt went high, and USC to hold on for the victory.
UW outshot USC 12-8 and held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks. That total included six corners for the Huskies in the second half.
Washington returns home Nov. 3 to host rival Washington State for a 7 p.m. that will be televised on Fox Sport Net.
