ST. LOUIS (AP and Washington News Services) - Brian Conklin scored 25 points and Saint Louis coasted to an 77-64 victory over Washington on Sunday.
In a game that marked the return of Lorenzo Romar to the school where he coached prior to joining the Huskies (3-1), Washington was unable to shake off road jitters and hot-shooting Saint Louis.
The Huskies scored the first two points, but the Billikens took the lead for good at 8-6 on Kwamain Mitchell's 3-point shot and never looked back. It was 50-25 Saint Louis at the half and Washington never got closer again than the final 13-point margin.
Mitchell scored 18 points for the Billikens (3-0) and contributed four 3-pointers. Saint Louis was 9 for 21 from behind the arc.
Terrence Ross led the Huskies with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tony Wroten had 14 points, all in the second half, before fouling out and Aziz N'Diaye scored 11 points.
The Billikens built as much as a 29-point lead at the 14:32 mark of the second half before Washington chipped away at the lead. The Huskies went on a 13-4 run to close it to a 20-point gap with 8:55 remaining.
Conklin made a three-point play to expand the lead back to 23 and basically put the game out of reach.
The Huskies closed with an 11-2 run to end the game and get to the final 13-point margin.
Despite the final score, Washington did have some positives from the game. The Huskies outrebounded the Billikens 40-26, including 16-4 on the offensive glass. After shooting 32% in the first half, Washington shot 51.6% in the second half.
Saint Louis made nine of its first 13 3-point baskets before missing their final eight attempts of the game.
Washington hosts Houston Baptist (2-3) on Thursday at 3 p.m. on Friday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
