EUGENE, Ore. - The 20th-ranked Husky women's tennis team did its best to overcome its injury woes today at Oregon, but the Ducks were able to eke out a 4-3 victory at the Student Tennis Center. Washington (8-7, 0-3 Pac-10) took the top three singles matches but was unable to grab one more point in the lower three.
The Huskies were able to start a full lineup today after having to forfeit third doubles and sixth singles a week ago at UCLA. Joining the team just this past week was Siana May, a former soccer player for UW the past two years who also was a tennis player in high school.
Washington shook up its doubles lineup, splitting up the sixth-ranked tandem of Venise Chan and Denise Dy to try and increase their odds at winning two out of the three matches. Dy teamed with Aleksandra Krsljanin, and earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over du Toit and Metzger, but Chan and Samantha Smith fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, to Oregon's top team. May teamed with Vanja Radunovic and the two lost, 8-2, to Stuckemann and Neubert of Oregon.
Chan got the Dawgs on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Patricia Skowronski at second singles, earning her 90th career singles win. She is just the fourth Husky to reach that plateau, joining Kristina Kraszewski (111), Dea Sumantri (100), and Claire Carter (91).
Dy then tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over 100th-ranked Pavlina Smatova at No. 1 singles. But Oregon got a 6-3, 6-0 win from Rabea Stuckemann over Krsljanin at fourth singles, and then du Toit caught fire against Radunovic at fifth singles, coming back from a set down to clinch it for Oregon, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
One positive for the Huskies was Samantha Smith at No. 3, as the junior fought back from a 6-3 first set loss against Julia Metzger, taking the second set, 6-4, and then winning the third set 10-point tiebreak, 10-5.
Washington will look to end its exhaustive road swing on Sunday on a high note, when it heads to Pullman to face Washington State.
