COLUMBIA, Mo. - After three days in Missouri the 12th-seeded Huskies were anxious to play their first Super Regional game against the fifth-seeded Tigers. It was a close and well-played game but Missouri came out on top, 4-0, taking game one of the best of three series. The Huskies fall to 37-15 on the year and Missouri improves to 51-8.
It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2008. UW still leads the overall series 5-2 but it was the first-ever game not played on a neutral site.
Chelsea Thomas, just a sophomore for Missouri, is one of three finalists for National Player of the Year. She struck out the side to start the game in the top of the first. Thomas ended with 13 strikeouts and the win, improving to 30-6 on the year.
With one out in the first for the Tigers, Jenna Marston reached on an error by second baseman Maggie Wagner (Woodinville, Wash.). After a double by Nicole Hudson to left center, Ashley Fleming hit an RBI in for the first run. The run was unearned. Husky freshman pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) got Catherine Lee to strike out swinging to end the inning.
Inglesby took the loss, pitching the complete game, allowing three earned runs while striking out seven.
In the second, back-to-back singles by Marla Schweisberger and Lisa Simmons led off the bottom of the inning for Missouri. Inglesby got Megan Christopher to strikeout for the first out and then struck out Abby Vock looking for the second. Rhea Taylor grounded out to senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) as the Huskies got out of the jam.
Nicole Hudson extended Missouri's lead to 2-0 in the third with a solo shot off of the scoreboard in center field on a full count pitch.
The first hit of the game for UW was a single up the middle by junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.). It was the first hit allowed by Thomas in nine innings since she threw a no-hitter against DePaul in the Regional Championship game last weekend.
Pohlman reached second on a ground out by junior Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Inglesby walked to put two on with two outs but a ground out ended the best chance for the Huskies.
Inglesby got the first three batters out in the fourth for the first time in the game.
Vock led off the fifth for Missouri with a single to left center that Salling jumped at and almost had but it tipped off of her glove. Vock then was called for the first out for leaving first base early. Taylor drew a walk and stole second on the first pitch. Inglesby walked Marston and Hudson to load the bases.
The first pitch to Fleming was a ground out but she got an RBI on the play to make it 3-0 Tigers. The first pitch to the pinch-hitter Mackenzie Sykes was a wild pitch as the fourth run scored. Sykes struck out swinging to end the inning.
With one out in the sixth, Pohlman doubled to center followed by a four-pitch walk to Salling but the Huskies were unable to get anything across. Pohlman had the only two hits in the game for UW.
The second out of the sixth made by UW was a great diving catch in right field by senior Ashley Tuiasosopo (Woodinville, Wash.).
The series will continue Sunday at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN2/ESPN360.com and 1150 AM KKNW. If the Huskies win, a second game will be played at approximately 6:30 p.m. PT. If Missouri wins game one Sunday, the series is over and the Huskies will be eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
