GOLF, Ill. -- Mary Lou Mulflur has seen a lot in her 30 years as head coach of the Husky women's golf program. After two rounds of the Windy City Collegiate Championship, her team is in position to pull off one rare feat after having survived another uncommon occurrence in today's first and second rounds at Glen View Club.
The Huskies, ranked No. 1 by Golfweek and No. 2 by Golfstat, are in prime position to win back-to-back tournaments for the first time since Mulflur's inaugural season as head coach in 1983-84. After winning the season-opening OSU Invitational by 25 shots, the Huskies enter Tuesday's final round atop the leaderboard. They shot 4-over 580 after 36 holes of action on Monday, two shots better than Pac-12 rival Arizona.
They did all of this without Mulflur at the course. The venerable coach was back at the team hotel with the flu, only showing up at the course for the final couple of holes in the afternoon. It marked just the third time in her 30 years that she has missed watching her team compete - the other two times were to attend the weddings of her siblings.
Stepping in to fill Mulflur's shoes were Assistant Coach Andrea VanderLende and Volunteer Assistant Coach David Elaimy. Mulflur credits them for doing an excellent job of keeping the young Huskies focused on the task at hand.

| T38 | Cyd Okino (4) | 71 | 80 | 151 |
"It's great when you have such excellent people available to step in for you," said Mulflur. "They did such a good job and the girls played really, really well today."
Washington's five-man team, consisting of three sophomores and a pair of freshmen, ended the first round with a 1-under 287 for a six-stroke lead and then shot 5-over 293 in the afternoon. The Huskies and Wildcats were the only teams out of 15 squads to finish under double digits over par for the day.
Three other teams besides Arizona are within 10 strokes of Washington's lead. Iowa State is third at 10 over, followed by Notre Dame (+12) and UC Davis (+14).
Four Huskies are among the top-25 individuals on the leaderboard and the fifth was second entering the second round before dropping all the way to 38th.
Sophomore Jennifer Yang is leading the way for Washington and is tied for fifth at even par 144. She shot 1-under 71 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon.
Yang is three shots off the lead. Amy Simaton of UC Davis and Lindsey Weaver of Notre Dame share the sit atop the standings at 3 under.
Two strokes behind Yang are sophomore SooBin Kim and freshman Ying Luo. Both combined to shoot 2-over 146 on the day.
Kim shot 72 and 74 despite having to use a modified grip, due to a nasty cut on her left thumb. Mulflur said she is playing on sheer determination right now, which enabled her to end the first day of action tied for 13th.
"I'm really proud of the maturity of SooBin," added VanderLende, who followed her for part of the day. "She has really learned to handle her emotions. She is really fiery and that can be good if you can channel that in the right direction.
"It is amazing how she has grown."
Joining Kim in 13th is Luo, who shot a pair of 73's. The walk-on is playing in just her second collegiate tournament.
Fellow freshman Charlotte Thomas is tied for 25th at 5 over. Coming off a victory in her first tournament, she shot 76 in the first round and improved to a 73 in the afternoon.
Cyd Okino shot 1-under 71 in the morning to start the second round tied for second. Unfortunately for Okino, she struggled with an 80 in the afternoon. She finds herself tied for 38th at 7 over, but a valuable lesson was learned by all the Huskies.
"The nice thing is that with depth, if you have a bad hole, someone has got your back," said Mulflur. "That is what we have been preaching. If something goes totally wrong, like Cyd in the afternoon, then the team is going to pick you up. Not everybody is going to have a great day every day.
"That is probably what we feel best about today; we have depth and everybody in the lineup has the ability to shoot under par."
Washington will tee off starting at 9:00 a.m. CT tomorrow. They will be paired with Arizona and Iowa State at the 6,333-yard course.
