STANFORD, Calif. -- The Washington women's golf team overcame a rough start at the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condeleezza Rice to finish the first round of the 54-hole tournament tied for sixth at 290 (+6).
The Huskies, ranked second by Golfstat.com and first by Golfweek, were 9 over par through six holes before settling down in the last two-thirds of the round. The rally keeps them in contention heading into Saturday's second round at Stanford Golf Course, just four shots back of the leaders.
"We got off to a really rough start and I told them I was really proud of them," said Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur of her team who entered the tournament carrying a 43-1 head-to-head record. "They fought back and just battled. We could have shot a whole lot higher than +6, but they just fought very hard and battled.
"There is no quit in these guys and that is going to be the kind of trait that is going to help you down the stretch."

USC is 2 over to lead a crowd at the top of the leaderboard. Oregon State is second, one stroke back, followed by Vanderbilt (+4), Stanford (+5) and Oklahoma State (+5). The Huskies are tied with Arizona State at +6.
Leading the way for Washington was freshman Charlotte Thomas. Like her teammates, she struggled early but bounced back to shoot 1-under 70. After six holes Thomas was 2 over, but four birdies in the middle of her round - countered by one bogey - helped her ultimately finish under par.
Thomas is tied for fourth and is just one shot behind a trio of golfers.
"I was really proud of her," Mulflur said of Thomas, who notched six birdies on the day. "She recovered after a bad start. She made bogeys but just never gave up and kept fighting and fighting."
Sophomore SooBin Kim is second among Huskies after shooting 1-over 72. The defending tournament champion managed only two birdies on a course that she dominated last year to set the tournament scoring record. Kim is tied for 17th.
Freshman Ying Luo shot 73 on Friday and finds herself tied for 25th.
The fourth counting score came from Cyd Okino, who shot 75. She is tied for 39th.
Kelli Bowers shot a non-counting 77.
The Huskies tee off starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday from the No. 1 tee.
