PALO ALTO, Calif. - Down one goal halfway through the first half, the Huskies rallied behind a goal from freshman James Moberg and an assist from Moberg to senior Nate Sackeyfio as Washington won a physical battle Sunday afternoon at Stanford, 2-1.
This is the third-straight season that the Huskies have tallied at least 10 wins. The 5-0-2 mark to start conference play is the best for a Husky team since the 1999 team went a perfect 7-0 and won the league. The eight-game unbeaten streak matches the longest for a Husky team since the 2006 team won eight in a row to open the season.
"It was another hard fought win for our team," said head coach Jamie Clark. "I'm proud of our guys for competing so hard both days."
Washington is 10-3-3 on the season and first in the Pac-12 with 17 total points at 5-0-2. Stanford falls below .500 at 6-7-1 and 3-3-1 in the Pac-12.
"Overall it was a great weekend for us. Teams are more physical with us now and they know our style so it was a great two games and great to come out with four points," Moberg said.
Zach Batteer gave the Cardinal the lead in the 21st minute. Eric Anderson made a run down the right side on the line and chipped the ball over the head of Husky keeper Spencer Richey to a wide open Batteer about 23 yards outs.
Senior Patrick Pacheco (Taos, N.M.) dished a nice ball to the center of the box as Moberg (Windsor, Calif.) was in perfect position and headed the ball into the back right of the net. His second goal of the season tied the game.
"I saw the ball down the line and knew I had to get in the box. That was what we had been working on all year. I saw it perfectly and put it in the net," said Moberg.
For the third-straight game, the UW played an opponent who was a man-down for a portion of the match. Stanford picked up a red card in the 42nd minute and played with 10 men the rest of the match.
Sackeyfio (Seattle, Wash.) scored his third goal in five games and his second-game winner in the 76th minute. Moberg found a wide-open Sackeyfio in the box who made two touches on the ball down the left line and put the ball just inside the right post.
"Nate set himself up in perfect position. I was thinking about taking a shot but the last second I saw he was open, passed it and he put it in with ease," Moberg added.
Each team had several opportunities late but good saves from Richey, sophomore Andy Thoma off the line and the Cardinal keeper, Drew Hutchins kept the rest of the shots out of the back of the net.
The Huskies took 11 shots in the game, five on goal while the Cardinal had 15 and six. Stanford took seven corners to five for the UW.
Richey (Seattle, Wash.) made five saves in goal for the Huskies.
The final two regular season home games for the Huskies are next week as the UW hosts San Diego State on Oct. 26 and UCLA on senior night on Oct. 29.
