SAN DIEGO - Great pitching by Kasey Stanchek and Bryana Walker along with a four-run third inning lifted No. 7/9 UW to a 5-0 shutout victory over San Diego Friday night. UW improves to 7-0 on the season while San Diego dropped its home opener, falling to 0-1.
It was the second win for UW on the day after earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory in 10 innings over Central Florida at SDSU earlier in the day.
Freshman Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) made her first start and pitched 4.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out two. She picked up her first career win as a Husky. Sophomore Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) earned her first save of the season, finishing off the last 3.0 innings, allowing just two hits as the two young Huskies combined for the shutout.
"It felt great to get a win," Stanchek said after the game. "I can only feel confident with such a great defense behind me and Bry did a fantastic job as well."
UW took a 1-0 lead in the first as freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'I) singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Huskies put away the game in the third inning with four runs. The rally started on a double by sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.). After freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) drew a walk, junior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) hit a two-run double. Wright scored on a single by senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.). The final run scored on an error that brought sophomore Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) across the plate.
UW will play two more games on Saturday at USD, first taking on UC Santa Barbara at 11:30 a.m. and then Boise State at 7 p.m. Live stats will be at www.gohuskies.com.
