SAN DIEGO - Once again the No. 7/9 UW softball team struck early and often in a 7-4 victory over Boise State Saturday evening in San Diego. UW improves to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 on the weekend while the Broncos fall to 6-3.
UW scored three runs in the first, two in the second and one each in the third and fifth innings for the victory. The Huskies held Boise State scoreless until the fifth inning in which the Broncos scored one run and then in the sixth where they got three more.
Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) improved to 5-0 on the year, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Fellow sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) earned her second save of the season, pitching the final two innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
"I came in relief tonight," said Walker. "I was just trying to stay calm. We practice a lot in pressure situations so I felt pretty comfortable like I've done it before. I know I have a great defensive team behind me so I just did my best to put us in the best possible situation to win."
At the plate, UW had 11 hits, five off of Boise State starter Allie Crump who only pitched 1.2 innings. Lela Work finished the game for the Broncos, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings.
Inglesby at the plate had three hits, three RBI and one run. Sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) had a solid game, earning the start in left field and scoring two runs while gathering two hits. Senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) had three more hits in the second game of the day, one run and two RBI.
"Tonight was a great team win," said Hayward. "One of our goals of the game was to make a statement offensively and I think we definitely did so in our first few innings."
Hayward scored the first run of the game on a double by Inglesby in the first. A triple by senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) drove in Inglesby and then Williams scored on an error.
A two-RBI double to right center by Inglesby drove in the two Husky runs in the second.
In the third inning, freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) scored on a single by Pohlman after reaching on a fielder's choice.
Freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) scored in the fifth on another single by Pohlman.
UW concludes play in the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. by taking on UC Davis at the University of San Diego.
