CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - No. 11/11 Missouri and pitcher Chelsea Thomas handed No. 5/7 UW its first loss of 2012, 2-0 Saturday night at the Cathedral City Classic.
UW is now 13-1 on the season while the Tigers improve to 5-2. It was the first meeting between the two teams after last year's NCAA Super Regional in Columbia, Mo.
Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) pitched a great game for the Huskies, allowing just two runs in the third inning on four hits.
In the third, Ashtin Stephens singled to left and scored on a triple to center by Jenna Marston. A sacrifice fly to center by Corrin Genovese made it 2-0 Missouri.
The first base runner for UW off of Chelsea Thomas was Kimi Pohlman as she reached on an error by the second baseman. She collided with the first baseman on the play. Junior Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) entered to pinch run. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) sent Fa'asua to second. The first pitch to senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was a wild pitch as Fa'asua reached third but would be stranded.
The Huskies turned a double play in the first inning and junior catcher Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) caught a runner trying to steal second.
UW finishes the tournament by taking on No. 22/22 Nebraska at 11 a.m. Sunday.
