SEATTLE - The Huskies played their first games at home of the 2012 season, winning both in the Husky Softball Classic. UW improved to 21-1 on the year with an 8-0 victory in five innings over Seattle U and then a 4-0 win in game two vs. North Dakota.
Seattle U defeated North Dakota in game one, 2-1.
Head coach Heather Tarr picked up her 300th career win with the victory over Seattle U.
Game One - No. 4/3 UW 8, Seattle U 0 (6 innings)
In its 2012 season open, UW earned a 8-0 run-rule victory in six innings. The Huskies went up 3-0 in the first, scored once in the fourth and twice each in the fifth and sixth to end the game early.
UW had nine hits in the game by seven different hits, led by sophomores Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) and Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) with two each.
"We had great teams wins today," said Fagaly. "We found a way to manufacture runs and play great defense. We just have to keep up the intensity and focus on one game at a time."
Sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) threw a one-hitter and had 10 strikeouts to improve to 11-0 on the year.
In her first game back after an injury sidelined her for nearly two full weeks, senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) picked up where she left off in the first. She singled and reached second on an error by the shortstop. Pohlman scored on a single to right by Inglesby. Freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) hit a bloop single to center to load the bases. Fagaly hit a two-RBI single to right for a 3-0 lead.
The run in the fourth was scored by Hayward on a single up the middle by senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.).
Lahners and sophomore Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) scored the two runs in the fifth on a single by Fagaly and a double by freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.)
In the sixth, Hayward singled and scored on a ground out by junior Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) Senior Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) scored the final run on an error during sophomore Kelli Suguro's (Kent, Wash.) at bat.
"it felt so good to play at home today in front of our fans, family and friends," said Smith. "It was a little different playing in the rain since we have been so used to the weather in Calif., but we love the Seattle rain and enjoy the challenges it brings. It only makes us better."
Richelle Ashburn took the loss for the Redhawks, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings.
Game Two - No. 4/3 UW 4, North Dakota 0
In the first-ever meeting with North Dakota, the Huskies came out on top in a tough 4-0 game in the rain. UW scored one run in each of the first three innings and then one more in the sixth on eight hits.
In the circle for UW, sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) improved to 5-1 allowing just three hits and striking out 11.
Pohlman bunted to reach first and scored on a single to right by Williams in the first inning. In the second, freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by junior Lindsay Monk (Menifee, Calif.).
Williams scored the third run in the next inning on a single up the middle by Lahners. The final UW run was scored by Fa'asua on a wild pitch.
Mallory Frank was the pitcher of record for the Sioux as she drops to 1-8 on the year.
