Huskies Grab First Pac-12 Victory

BOULDER, Colo. - For the second-straight game and third out of the last four, the Washington women's soccer team played 90+ minutes on the road, picking up its first overtime and Pac-12 victory of 2012 with a 2-1 win at Colorado Friday afternoon.
Washington improved to 8-2-1 and 1-1-0 in Pac-12 play while Colorado dropped its first game at home of the season, falling to 6-2-3 and 0-1-1.
Leading goal scorer Lindsay Elston, a junior from Sammamish, Wash., scored her fourth game-winning goal of the season just over 30 seconds into overtime to give the UW the victory. The goal was unassisted as Elston connected on the end of a long cross from Annie Sittauer.
"On Lindsay's goal we went straight down the field, Elston crossed it, it came out back out she got it again on the end line and drove it home," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "She had it set in her mind we weren't going to lose that game which was great."
Fellow junior and Sammamish, Wash., native Allie Beahan scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute for the Huskies. Elston crossed the ball to freshman Isabel Farrell who took one touch and made a short pass to Beahan just outside the keeper box. It was the second goal for the season for Beahan.
The Buffs tied the game in the 82nd minute as Emily Paxton netted her first goal of the season on an assist from Amy Barczuk. Paxton gathered up the ball on a scramble on the box to even the match.
"Overall I was pleased with our play," said Gallimore. "I thought we were doing things a lot better than we had been the last few games. Particularly in the midfield I thought we played the game plan more disciplined today then we have been. Our only letdown we had was late in the game we looked fatigued and let the game get away from us plus they (Colorado) were down a goal so they started to press. Other than that small lapse I thought we did a decent job in the game and played some decent soccer."
Washington had several good chances in the match by Chelsea Archer, Christina Archer, Elston and Falon Miller but Colorado goalkeeper Annie Brunner made four great saves in the match.
Senior Kari Davidson (Portland, Ore.) was once against outstanding in goal for the UW making five saves and playing every minute of the match.
Colorado had a three-shot advantage in the game and took one more shot on goal then the Huskies. Anne Stuller took eight shots on goal herself for the Buffs.
"I would've liked to see us at 1-0 be more aggressive," Gallimore added. "I thought we had the ability too so that's something that we are really going to talk about between now and Utah. When we go up in games we can't let up we have to try to get a second one to give us a cushion. We are leaving for Utah for our final road game before our big home stand and will try to to keep the Husky winning streak this week alive."
Pac-12 road play continues for the Huskies at Utah on Sunday at noon PT. That game will not air on TV but live stats will be available via Utah's website.
