Jimmy Gabriel is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Washington women's soccer team. Gabriel is offering his services with the women's squad while maintaining the assistant coaching position he has held the past four seasons with the Husky men's soccer team.
Both the Husky men's and women's teams, with Gabriel's help, won Pac-10 championships in 2000 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
He provides a wealth of experience and knowledge for the Huskies with 22 years of coaching experience. He is also well-versed in the local Seattle soccer scene.
Gabriel was the captain of the Seattle Sounders of the NASL in 1974 and 1975 and was an assistant coach and then head coach of the team from 1974 to 1979. During that period, Gabriel coached Washington men's head coach Dean Wurzberger. He then was the head coach of the San Jose Earthquakes for one outdoor season and two indoor seasons.
A native of Dundee, Scotland, Gabriel began what would become a 20-year playing career when he was 16, with a three-year stint with Dundee in the Scottish Primary League. His seven following years with Everton was highlighted by winning the FA Cup in 1966. He also has played on Scotland's international team.
Gabriel coached in England from 1986 to 1997 and, since relocating to Seattle in February 1997, has served as the coaching director of the Washington State Youth Soccer Association. He also has worked in certification with the State Coaches Association. He and his wife, Pat, reside in Kirkland.
