Primarily competes in track, but trains with the cross country team in the fall ... one of the most decorated athletes in UW history ... the 2006 NCAA 800-meter champion ... also boasts 2005 Pac-10, 2005 NCAA West Region, and 2006 MPSF Indoor 800m titles, and led UW's 4x400-meter squad to a 2006 West Regional crown ... a six-time NCAA track and field All-American ... holds a share of four school records ... quit track for a year in 2003-04 ... ran just one season of high-school track.
2005-06: The 2006 NCAA 800-meter champion ... was UW's first NCAA champion on the track since Ja'Warren Hooker (55m dash) in 1998 ... broke the UW record by nearly a full second with a time of 1:46.29 in the NCAA 800m final ... time was the seventh-fastest by an American men's runner in 2006 ... returned hours later to lead UW's 4x400-meter relay to eighth, earning his second All-America honor of the day ... competed in the 800m at the 2006 USA Championships in Indianapolis, and was selected to represent Team USA at the 2006 NACAC Championships in the Dominican Republic ... captured four All-America honors in all during the 2006 season, equaling Hooker (1998) for the most-ever in one season by a UW male ... six career All-America honors equal the third-most ever for a Husky ... was an All-American indoors in both relays, leading the 4x400-meter squad to third, and distance medley relay to fifth ... was third in the 800m at both Pac-10s and Regionals ... led UW's 4x400m relay to a Regional Championships win ... won the 800m at the MPSF Indoor Championships to lead UW to its first-ever team title ... in addition to school record at 800m outdoors, set school records in the 4x400m (3:07.03) and DMR (9:35.35) indoors ... also holds a share of UW's outdoor 4x400m record, set in 2005 ... ran just once in the fall, placing 63rd at the Sundodger Invitational.
2004-05: Had an outstanding season after walking away from track and field in 2003-04 ... came from behind in the last 200 meters to win Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional titles at 800m ... clocked a 1:47.31 in the Pac-10 800m final, nearly two seconds faster than his previous best and, at the time, UW's fastest since 1982 ... earned two All-America honors in 2005, becoming just the 15th UW male to do so ... was 10th in the 800m at NCAA Outdoors, and led UW's distance medley relay to fifth at NCAA Indoors ... also ran on UW's 10th-place 4x400m at NCAA Outdoors ... led 4x400m relay to third at Pac-10s in a UW-record 3:03.85; and to third at the NCAA Regional ... broke UW's indoor 800m record with a time of 1:49.64 (since broken)... also ranks on UW's all-time indoor top-10 in the 4x400m (2nd, 3:07.94) and DMR (2nd, 9:36.20; 7th, 9:51.36) ... did not compete in cross country.
2003-04: Sat out the 2003-04 season .. ran 1:51.06 for 800m at the Seattle International in June.
2002-03: Set a UW indoor freshman record of 1:50.97 at 800m, then-second-fastest all-time at UW ... also cracked UW's indoor top-10 in the 4x400m (6th, 3:12.42) and DMR (6th, 10:01.35) ... ran sparingly outdoors, with an 800m best of 1:54.49 at the Oregon Invite ... also competed at 400m and 1500m, and 4x400m.
High School and Personal: Born in Baltimore ... parents are Karen Smith and Gary Colbert ... has two older siblings, Richard and Everette ... was undefeated at 800m as a senior, his first year competing in track and field ... swept league, district and state titles at 800m in 2002 ... state-winning time of 1:55.3 was a personal-best ... also ran on Renton's state champion 4x400-meter relay, helping the school to a fifth-place state finish ... took second in the 800m at the 2002 Pasco Invite, and helped the mile relay to seventh ... also lettered in swimming as a senior.
