Huskies Led By Drury, Schucht At Wisconsin
October 09, 2026 | Cross Country
MADISON, Wisc. – With a pair of newcomers leading the way for both sides, the Husky men's and women's cross country teams got back to the racing grind today at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. The 23rd-ranked women's team finished 16th in the loaded field, and the 13th-ranked men finished 24th in a race that had 21 of the top-30 teams in the nation.
Â
The women's team led off and was led by first-year from Japan, Sherry Drury, who went out fearlessly in the top-20 through 2k and despite losing some ground in the second half, still led the team finishing 54th overall in 20:23 for the 6k course. The second Husky finisher was Nicole Bissell, running 20:36 for 75th overall. First-year Elena Aldrink was close behind in 82nd in 20:40.
Â
First-year Abigail Hennessy got into the top-100 with a 97th-place finish in a time of 20:49, and Josephine Welin capped the scoring in 123rd in 21:01. First-years Milla Roberts and Charlotte Hopkins completed the A-race lineup, with Roberts in 142nd overall and Hopkins in 162nd.
Â
In the men's championship race, Theo Schucht, the Boston College transfer, led the Huskies in 78th-place overall in 23:44 for 8,000-meters. Tyrone Gorze ran 23:52 to take 90th, and Isaac Briggs was two seconds back in 98th-place. Transfer Jonathan Podbielski moved up 30 spots over the final 2k to finish 128th in 24:05, and Nathan Neil capped the scoring in 175th in 24:25. Josiah Tostenson placed 181st and Jamar Distel was 214th today.
Â
UW also had full squads racing in the B races today, testing its depth and creating an opportunity for more runners to make a statement. In the women's race, transfer Carmel Fitzgibbon led through the 2k split, and finished 13th overall in 20:58. Fellow transfers Rory Clare and Louisa Esmouni placed 15th and 25th, respectively. First-year Lauren McCalla was 51st in a time of 21:57, and Sophie Schoolmeester was right behind in 22:00 in 56th. Elissa Schaeffer finished in 69th overall, and the Huskies placed fourth overall in the team standings.
Â
In the men's B-race, the Huskies finished fifth overall, led by Parker Mong, who was leading the race at the halfway point. Mong wound up in 12th-place overall in 24:08, a time that would have put him as the No. 5 scorer for UW in the A race. First-year Cohen Butler had a strong run in 25th overall in 24:24. James Crabtree and Cruize Corvin were 31st and 33rd, respectively, and transfer Zane Bergen finished 54th in 24:48. First-year Amin Fidaar came across in 81st and Thom Diamond was 115th.
Â
Washington will be back on the same starting line three weeks from now, as the Big Ten Championships are set for Oct. 30 in Madison at the Zimmer Championship Course.
