MADISON, Wisc. – The Husky cross country teams kicked off the championship portion of their seasons today with their third time racing at the Big Ten Championships. The women's squad picked up a strong fourth-place finish, and the men followed with a solid sixth-place run at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Wisconsin. Sherry Drury, Nicole Bissell, and Theo Schucht all earned All-Big Ten Team honors.
Â
The women's 6k was up first, and the 29th-ranked Huskies were the fifth out of five ranked squads in the field. Washington grabbed fourth overall with 115 points and was able to pick up a key win over 25th-ranked Minnesota, which placed fifth. No. 15 Oregon got the win with 35 points, then No. 23 Northwestern and No. 26 Penn State were second and third with 90 and 92 points.
Â
Drury led the Dawgs for the second meet in a row, crossing in ninth-place in a time of 20:08 for the 6,000-meter course. The first-year from Okayama, Japan, Drury earns All-Big Ten First Team distinction and All-Freshman Team honors as well.
Â
Transfer Nicole Bissell was the second Husky in 20th-place in a time of 20:19 to grab All-Big Ten Second Team honors. First-year Milla Roberts had her best run yet this fall with a 22nd-place effort in 20:24, and first-year Abigail Hennessy was UW's fourth in 28th-place in 20:30. Transfer Carmel Fitzgibbon capped the scoring in 36th-place in 20:38, as UW's entire scoring five was new to the roster this year.
Â
All-American Julia David-Smith returned to action for the first time this fall today and she was 41st overall in 20:44. Fifth-year Josephine Welin placed 50th overall, first-year Elena Aldrink was 65th, and transfer Rory Clare finished 92nd out of 149 total finishers.
Â
In the men's 8k, the Huskies also came in seeded fifth in the field with a No. 29 national ranking. UW wound up sixth overall with 165 points. Four of the five teams to finish ahead of the men today are ranked 22nd or higher, with Michigan the one unranked team to get past the Dawgs in fifth-place.
Â
Schucht, the Boston College transfer in his first season as a Husky, led UW as he did two weeks ago at the Wisconsin Invite. He finished 14th overall in a time of 23:24. That earns Schucht All-Big Ten Second Team. Fourth-year Tyrone Gorze had gone out solo early in the race and held the lead past the halfway point, but he was eventually tracked down by the pack and he wound up 26th overall in 23:45.
Â
Jamar Distel moved up well throughout the race, including gaining 20 spots over the final 1,000-meters, and he finished 39th in 23:55. Isaac Briggs was the No. 4 Husky across, placing 45th in 24:02. Rounding out the score was third-year Parker Mong in 47th in 24:04. First-year Cohen Butler was right behind in 24:05 for 49th-place. Finishing 57th was Cruize Corvin, Jonathan Podbielski was 82nd overall and Josiah Tostenson was 89th in 24:48.
Â
Washington will now have two more weeks to sharpen their knives before the NCAA West Regional meet. That race will determine who punches tickets to NCAAs. Sacramento will be the site of Regionals, on Friday, Nov. 13.
