Gretchen Maurer is one of the team's three returning starters ... an all-around athlete, who owns a powerful jump serve ... very competitive ... looks to improve her floor defense ... saw playing time on the outside and at the setter position her first two seasons, before moving to setter full time a year ago.
At Washington:
2001 (Junior): Earned the starting position at setter, after sharing the role her first two seasons with Britni Churnside ... only Husky to play and start in all 27 matches for the second consecutive season ... one of five players to appear in all 97 games ... ranked 28th nationally in assists per game with a 12.53 mark ... seventh in UW history in career assists with 1,765 ... fourth in the conference in assists per game overall and in Pac-10 matches (12.34/g) ... also averaged 0.25 aces per game, 2.22 digs per game and 0.71 blocks per game ... opened the season by earning Pt. Huskies all-tournament honors, averaging 12.46 assists in the three matches ... had 48 assists and three service aces against tournament champion Texas on September 1 ... 53 assists, two aces, and four blocks in a five-game marathon win at Denver ... helped the Huskies to a .374 team hitting percentage at the Air Force Invitational, earning her tournament MVP honors ... had a career best eight blocks in a three-game win over SE Louisiana ... 2000 (Sophomore): Only Husky to play and start in all 27 matches ... also played in 95 of the team's 96 games ... saw time at both the setter and outside hitter positions ... averaged 3.91 assists per game and was fourth on the team in kills per game (2.03) ... led the UW in service aces with 29 ... her 0.31 aces per game ranked 10th among Pac-10 schools ... third on the team in digs per game (2.41) ... hit .444 in the season-opener versus Portland State, tallying five kills on just nine attempts to go along with three aces ... had one of her best matches as a Husky versus Texas-San Antonio, tallying a triple-double ... had 11 kills on .500 hitting with 41 assists (career-best), three service aces, 12 digs and four blocks against UT-SA ... had 10 kills on a career-high 39 attempts and 11 digs in the team's upset of Texas ... reached double digits for the fourth time in digs with 12 in the team's home-opener with Arizona State ... tied a career-high with five blocks at Idaho ... recorded double-digit kill totals in six of the last 11 matches, beginning with an 11-kill performance versus Oregon State ... crushed a career-best four aces in the team's battle at Arizona State ... hit a career-high .556 with 13 kills on just 18 attempts in the team's win over Idaho State ... had another great all-around performance versus Stanford, finishing with 16 kills, three aces, 13 digs and five blocks ... 13-dig performance against the Cardinal was the first of four straight games with double-digit dig totals ... reached career-bests in kills with 17 and digs with 25 (also a team season-high) at Oregon ... had a double-double (14 kills, 13 digs) in the team's five-game match at Oregon State ... 1999 (Freshman): Named the team's Most Competitive Player after seeing time as backup setter and also as a hitter in 37 games ... longest stretch as setter came in the California match in Seattle on Sept. 17, when she played in three games, posting a season-high 29 assists to go with three kills, seven digs and a block ... had eight digs and 17 assists at USC on Oct. 29 ... played as a hitter in the final weekend of the year at Stanford and Cal ... in the match at Berkeley, notched season highs with 10 kills, 26 attacks, three blocks and 19 digs, the third-highest digs total of the season by a Husky ... had 13 assists, three digs and a season-high three service aces at UCLA ... two kills on two swings to go with 18 assists and a block at Washington State on Oct. 16.
At San Clemente High School:
A three-time letterwinner for coach Rob O'Rear ... played on the USA Junior National Team the summer after her senior year ... all-league and all-CIF as a senior, when she was also team MVP and captain ... team made CIF semifinals her sophomore and senior years and quarterfinals her junior year ... played club volleyball for Saddleback Valley, advancing to the national finals both as a sophomore and as a senior ... earned letters in surfing, swimming and water polo and twice finished second in the state in surfing ... also an award-winning lifeguard ... won numerous academic awards and was a High School Heisman Trophy nominee ... graduated with honors with a 3.5 grade-point average.

CD I listen to most: Declaration by Steven Curtis Chapman.
If I could play another sport at UW, it would be: If there was a surf team, I'd do that for sure. But of the available sports, I'd do swimming, because I'm a water bug (anyone who knows me can testify to that!).
My best memory of my Husky career so far: Our first time "playing for equipment" during freshman year before our trip to Holland. We (the freshmen) beat everyone. The upperclassmen were so bitter - it was great!
What I want people to remember me most for after I leave the UW: That I care about the team and each person individually and that I gave my best effort everyday.
The best part about being a student-athlete at UW is: Having the opportunity to inspire others.
If I could have dinner with any three people in history, they would be: Peter, Paul and Jesus.
Before a match, I always: Pray.
The most stimulating class I ever took at Washington: A tie between religious nature and its study and European witch trials.
My most embarrassing athletic moment: During my freshman year of high school, I was on the golf team. I was playing in a really big tournament, even though I wasn't good, and there was a television camera filming us teeing off. When it was my turn to tee off, I got up there, swung and missed the ball in front of everyone.
