SEATTLE – It had been nearly three months since Aaron Nelson last suited up for a race. His previous run came in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing 21st overall to earn his second All-America honors. Tonight on the first night of the two-day Husky Classic, Nelson showed he hasn't lost a step, as he broke the UW school record in the indoor 5,000-meters, running 13:47.42.
Nelson's record run was just one of seven new top-10 marks posted by the Huskies in the first night that included just a handful of events. The Husky sprinters earned four new top-10 marks in the 200-meters, sophomore Kaylee Flanagan earned one in the women's 5k, and freshman Onyie Chibuogwu got another in the women's weight throw.
Making his track season debut, Nelson was in the top heat in a loaded section of the 5,000-meters. Coming into the day, only nine men had run under 14-minutes in the 5k nationally, but 15 men did so tonight in the Dempsey. Nelson would be one, finishing seventh overall to break Colton Tully-Doyle's record of 13:48.86 set back in 2010. The time will put Nelson in the top-20 nationally, right on the bubble for a top-16 spot to NCAA Indoors.
The 200-meters got things going at 4:00 p.m., and the Husky sprints crew ran away with both victories and several personal-bests. Senior Gianna Woodruff cut three-tenths of a second off her career-best, running 24.43 to win. That moved her from fifth up to No. 2 on the Husky top-10 list, behind only Ashley Lodree's record of 24.22 from 2007. Sophomore Kennadi Bouyer also ran the distance for the first time this season, and got a top-10 mark out of it, as she went 24.80 to move to No. 6 all time. Freshman Sierra Peterson also registered a new 10th-best mark as she went 25.01 today.
The men's 200-meters played out in a similar manner, as junior Quadelle Satterwhite ran in the final section, and posted the top time of the day to get the win in a new PR of 21.52 seconds. That moved him just ahead of former football standout Beno Bryant into ninth on the Husky top-10 list. Sophomore Andrew Brown was also second overall in a PR of 21.78.
Flanagan, running in the second of four heats of the women's 5k, cut 19 seconds off her career-best, running 16:44.42. That moved her onto the Husky top-10 list at No. 8 overall. Jenna Sanders also finished her first 5k in 17:17.10.
Chibuogwu had the best weight throw mark in the first flight today, throwing 53-feet, 7-inches on her third and final attempt to wind up 13th overall. She has improved each time out, from 48-10 in her debut, to 50-5 ¼ two weeks ago, and now today's mark jumps her all the way to No. 4 in the UW recordbooks.
The meet resumes Saturday at 9:15 a.m., with the 60-meter finals and top heats of each distance event starting at 2:45 p.m.
