April 16, 2015 | Softball
SEATTLE – For the second time this season, Washington scored runs in four consecutive innings against Seattle U. to blast itself to an 11-3, five-inning run rule victory Wednesday night at Logan Field at SU Park.
For the 25th time this season and third game in a row, Washington posted double-digit hits, pounding out 11, with four extra base hits including two doubles, a triple and a home run to improve to 36-11 overall on the season. Seattle U. falls to 14-30 with their loss.
With tonight's home run, the Huskies have now hit 20 in the last nine games, totaling 69 on the season which is 20 more than Washington had all of last season.
Senior Kylee Lahners led the Huskies at the plate with three RBI off two hits while freshman Trysten Melhart also recorded two hits while driving in a pair. Sophomore Ali Aguilar is now riding a eight-game hitting streak after tallying a pair of hits in the contest.
The Husky runs were spread throughout the innings, putting up a four-spot in both the third and fifth frames. The scoring began with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the second. Senior Kelli Suguro drew a leadoff walk before Lahners drove her 12th home run of the season to deep center field.
The Huskies used another two-out rally in the third to plate four more runs. Junior Kimberlee Souza was hit-by-pitch and freshman Julia DePonte drew a walk to put a pair on for Melhart who delivered her first collegiate triple to score the pair. Lahners followed suit with her 50th hit of the season, a double to score Melhart. The Huskies tacked on one more in the inning thanks to freshman Taylor Van Zee's RBI single to plate Lahners.
After back-to-back three up, three down innings by the Husky defense, Seattle U. got one of those runs back in the third, taking advantage of a leadoff single. The Redhawks drew a walk and loaded the bases off a bunt-single before drawing another walk to score their first run of the game. SU threatened again, but Washington's first baseman Courtney Gano and catcher Souza got the runner out at home to keep the Redhawks at bay.
Not content to let the Redhawks battle, the Huskies responded to the threat, wasting no time getting that run back in the fourth. After Souza and DePonte both singled up the middle, pinch runner Kelly Meggs scored off an error to put the Dawgs on top, 7-1.
In the bottom half of the frame, freshman Kirstyn Thomas replaced Husky starter Hailey Bator in the circle. The Redhawks threatened, hitting a pair of singles but Thomas induced a groundout to end the inning.
After putting up a four-spot for the second time in the game, Washington reached run-rule territory in the fifth. The seniors got the Huskies on the board to begin the game and this time it was the freshmen starting the rally to end the game. Freshman Krystal Aubert drew a walk before Thomas pinch-hit, roping a single over the head of the shortstop. Souza then walked to load the bases and pinch hitter Dani Braun delivered an RBI single to score Aubert.
After a wild pitch scored another Husky run, Melhart recorded her second hit of the game to reach first base. A throwing error on the play then allowed both Braun and Souza to score and give the Huskies an 11-1 edge.
The Redhawks threatened in the fifth, loading the bases and scoring a run off a walk and a single but a beautifully turned 6-4-3 double play by Aguilar, junior Jennie McNeill and Lahners ended the game.
Bator (11-2) earned the win in the circle, tossing three innings, allowing just one run off two hits.
The Huskies return to action next Friday-Sunday (April 24-26) as the team travels to Berkeley, Calif. to resume Pac-12 play against Cal.
