AZUSA, Calif. - Four multi-talented Huskies competing at the California Invitational Combined Events all finished with career-bests today, led by the performances of senior Nick Pfeiffer and junior C.J. Smith in the decathlon and hepthathlon, respectively. The meet, tied in with the Mt. SAC Relays, was held at Cougar Stadium, hosted by Azusa Pacific.
Smith, who has done everything from running cross country and steeplechase to running on 4x400m relays and triple jumping for the Huskies, completed her first career heptathlon today, and wound up with 4,978 points, finishing 13th overall out of 50 athletes that started the seven events on Wednesday. Smith's total moves her to No. 4 in Washington history, and ranks her 21st in the NCAA West Region this year.
Pfeiffer also wrapped up a career-best decathlon performance, scoring 6,907 points to take fifth out of 20 entries in the top decathlon section. That score is just off the Husky top-10 list but puts him ninth in the West Region. Also wrapping up their first college decathlons were redshirt freshmen Cole Jensen and Carson Murray. Jensen's two-day point total was 6,451, while Murray finished with 6,387 points.
Smith jumpstarted her second day in the long jump, with a big lifetime-best in the long jump, going 18-7 1/4 on her third and final attempt. She then threw the javelin 98-feet, 8-inches, a 13-foot PR. Finishing with the 800-meters, one of Smith's top open events, she ran the fastest time out of the 41 remaining competitors, going 2:11.96 to add 936 points to her final score.
Pfeiffer had the second-best pole vault clearance in the competition today, matching his lifetime-best at 15-feet, 9-inches. He also had a PR in the javelin of 142-5, and ran 4:41.31 in the final 1,500-meters. He also went 16.26 in the 110m hurdles and threw 118-0 in the discus.
Jensen also picked up a PR in the pole vault, clearing 13-9 1/4, and ran 15.77 seconds for the 110m hurdles. Murray's best day two events were a 20-foot PR in the javelin of 158-10, and a discus toss of 118-8.
The Huskies have another group of just under thirty athletes set to take flight at the Mt. SAC Relays starting on Friday.
