SEATTLE – The No. 47 University of Washington women's tennis team dropped a nail biter on senior day as it fell to No. 57 Oregon, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Huskies, playing in their final home match of the season, move to 11-11 overall and 3-7 in Pac-12 play.
Four seniors were honored Friday in Natalie Allen, Riko Shimizu, Julija Lukac and Capucine Gregoire and the three that saw action in the lineup all picked up singles victories.
Oregon claimed the doubles point in a match that came down to court two's result. Gregoire and Shimizu breezed to an 8-1 win on court three but a loss on court one evened up the score. The Ducks clinched the point after taking an 8-4 win at number two singles over Lukac and Grace Ysidora.
The Huskies responded quickly once singles play started as UW claimed every first set and earned three-straight two-set wins behind the three seniors in the lineup. First, Capucine Gregoire earned her 14th win of the season with an easy 6-1, 6-3 victory on court five. Gregoire has won 13 of her last 15 matches.
Riko Shimizu followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at number six singles to move her season record to 12-6 and give UW a 2-1 lead. Julija Lukac made it 3-1 as she knocked out Marlou Kluving 6-2, 6-4 on court four, to end the regular season with a 16-6 record, her best mark since her sophomore season.
Oregon rebounded with three tough three-set wins at the top of the lineup. Grace Ysidora fell on court two, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to Alyssa Tobita cutting the UW lead to 3-2. Elianne Douglas-Miron, facing 71st-ranked Nia Rose on court one, took the first set 6-2, but dropped the next two 6-2, 6-3 evening the score at 3-all and leaving the deciding match to court three and freshman Miki Kobayashi.
The newcomer out of Japan earned a 6-2 win in set one over Nicole Long and despite being down 1-4 in set two, battled back to even the score at 4-4 before Long took the next two points for a 6-4 decision. In the third set, Long was able to clinch the match by winning 6-2 giving the Ducks the win.
Up next for the Huskies is the Pac-12 Championships, April 22-26 in Ojai, California. The championship and invitational brackets will be announced at a later date.
