LOS ANGELES - Four Huskies are paving the way for the rest of the squad at Drake Stadium this weekend, as the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships began today. The points handed out to the top-eight finishers in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at the end of Sunday's action will carry over to the team scores next week when the rest of the conference meets at UCLA.
The Huskies had some ups and downs on day one of the multis, exemplified by redshirt freshman Carson Murray, who fouled his three long jump attempts to drop him to the bottom of the standings, but then responded in a huge way in the high jump. Murray jumped three consecutive PRs, clearing 6-11, then his first ever seven-foot make at 7-0 1/4, and one more bar for good measure, as he cleared 7-1 1/2. That ties Murray for the No. 4 high jump clearance in school history, even with another decathlete, Jeremy Taiwo. It also ties him for 12th in the West Region.
But it's fellow redshirt freshman Cole Jensen in the top spot through day one for UW. Jensen sits sixth overall with 3,709 points, while senior Nick Pfeiffer is 11th with 3,480. Jensen had a PR in the 100-meters of 11.19 seconds, a long jump of 21-2 1/2, a shot put career-best of 37-3, a high jump make of 6-6 1/4, and finally a big PR in the 400-meters of 49.44 seconds. His previous 400m best was 51.30.
Pfeiffer also started with a 100m PR of 11.37 seconds, but struggled in the long jump at 20-11 1/4. He went 38-10 1/4 in the shot put and then 5-11 1/4 in the high jump. He finished with a 400-meter PR of 50.39 seconds.
Washington's lone entrant in the women's heptathlon, C.J. Smith, set PRs in three of the four events on day one. In her first event, she took over half a second off her previous 100-meter hurdles best, running 14.92 today. After a high jump of 4-10 1/2, she had another PR in the shot put, going 33-9 1/4. Finally, Smith took third out of the 14 competitors in the 200-meters, running a huge PR of 24.78 seconds.
Smith is currently ninth out of the 14 entries with 2,994 points.
