OREM, Utah - The Washington softball team continued its fall season Monday afternoon in Orem, Utah, notching a 20-7 (8) victory over Utah State.
Sophomore Julia DePonte sparked the Husky offense to a 26-hit explosion. She garnered a 5-for-5 performance, including two home runs while notching six RBI to lead the squad. Also producing multi-RBI efforts were sophomore Krystal Aubert (4), junior Casey Stangel (3), sophomore Taylor Van Zee (2) and senior Kimberlee Souza (2).
In the circle, the Huskies received three solid innings from sophomore transfer Madi Schreyer. The right-hander collected two strikeouts over three frames of one-hit ball. Senior Hailey Bator came on in relief in the fourth, tossing two innings before freshman Taran Alvelo closed out the game, recording seven strikeouts in the final three frames.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the first after Van Zee doubled and scored off Souza's single.
After a quiet second inning, Washington's offense posted a five-run third. A pair of RBI singles from Van Zee and Souza set up DePonte as she delivered her first home run of the day, a three-run shot to put the Dawgs up, 6-0.
After Schreyer retired the side in order for the second straight inning, Washington broke the game open with a three-run fourth as Van Zee, junior Ali Aguilar and freshman Tannon Snow each recorded an RBI.
The Aggies scored their first run of the game in the fourth, taking advantage of a walk and hit-by-pitch before scoring off a single.
Leading 9-1 in the fifth, back-to-back doubles by senior Courtney Gano and DePonte gave the Huskies their 10th run of the game. Washington then unloaded on their eighth and ninth home runs of the fall season as Aubert and Stangel both went yard to put the Dawgs on top, 13-1.
After Utah State hit a three-run home run in the fifth, the Huskies scored seven unanswered runs in the final three frames, including DePonte's second home run in the eighth, to run away with the 20-7 victory.
