
Washington Routs EWU To Win Season Opener

SEATTLE -- Senior Kelsey Plum went 11-of-15 from the floor to record 32 points, her 22nd career 30-plus point game, in No. 17 Washington's 100-52 win over Eastern Washington University Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. A crowd of 2,263 was on hand to witness the Huskies' season-opener.
Plum also finished with a team-high five assists to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Senior Chantel Osahor was Washington's second leading-scorer with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Huskies had 10 different players in the scoring column and as a team, shot 54.0 percent (34-for-63) from the floor, while holding EWU to 32.8 percent (20-for-61). Washington also held a 39-35 advantage on the boards.
Sophomore Hannah Johnson and freshman Mai-Loni Henson also enjoyed strong outings. Johnson finished with a career-high 10 points and career-high seven rebounds, while Henson rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts with 12 to go along with three boards in her debut.
After leading by just one with 3:21 remaining in the first, Washington went on a 12-5 run and lead 22-14 after 10 minutes of play. The Huskies clamped down defensively in the second quarter, holding the Eagles to just seven points. Washington, meanwhile, went off for 30 to run away with a 52-21 halftime lead. Plum led all scorers at intermission with 25, including 3-of-5 from three-point land.
The Huskies would extend the lead to 53 after three quarters of play, holding EWU to just nine points in the third quarter. Offensively, redshirt junior Heather Corral connected on three three-pointers in the third to score nine points. She also contributed three steals and three assists on the night.
Sophomore Deja Strother was strong around the basket, tallying eight points and four boards in just 15 minutes of action.
After learning transfer Natalie Romeo was cleared to play just hours before the game, the junior went on to score five points, including a three-pointer in her Husky debut.
Washington will return to Alaska Airlines Arena on Monday (Nov. 14) for the second round of the WNIT Preseason Tournament, hosting Colorado State at 7 p.m. For ticket information, click here.
