Huskies Sit In Sixth After Opening 18

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico -- After Sunday's opening day of the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate, the University of Washington men's golf team sits in sixth place after shooting a team score of 2-under 282 at the internationally-recognized Querencia Golf Club (par 72, 7,070 yards).
"The team looked good on the course today," head coach Alan Murray said. "They were very determined and focused on what they were doing. Their attitudes were first-class and they have a growing resilience that is evident when they play."
The Huskies were paced by sophomore Carl Yuan and senior Corey Pereira who both carded 1-under 70 performances and finished in a tie for 16th. Pereira carded six birdies while Yuan had five on the day, with Periera recording a stretch of four consecutive and Yuan managing back-to-back birdies helping him to recover from a misstep on the par-3 second hole.
"Carl and Corey both showed a lot of guts, class and resiliency to bounce back and be patient right until the end," Murray said. "I'm really proud of their efforts."
Freshmen Sam Warkentin and Henry Lee both carded even-par 71 performances and finished the day in a tie for 29th. The rookies both recorded three birdies in their first round of action.
"Sam was fighting a minor injury this morning and really played a super round of golf," Murray said. "He hit a lot of good shots and an even-par is a good score on this golf course. Henry was really solid and played better than his score showed. A couple of late bogeys made him feel a little flat at the end of the round but he hit a lot of great shots."
Rounding out Washington's lineup was senior Kevin Kwon who entered the clubhouse at 2-over after his 73 today.
"Kevin played a lot of good golf in his 73," Murray said. "It is so easy to drop shots on this golf course due to the penalties for being offline and the severity of the greens. He just didn't scramble pars on the way in."
The Huskies enter the second day of play nine strokes behind Oklahoma State and Texas who are tied for first at 11-under 273.
The tournament continues tomorrow (Feb. 27) with an 8 a.m. PT shotgun start.
