Upsets Put Huskies In Pac-12 Final Four Again
April 27, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second year in a row, the seventh-seeded Huskies posted the only two upsets on day one of the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships, and find themselves in the final four after defying expectations once again. The Dawgs had to take the longest route possible, playing four matches over nearly a 12 hour span, culminating with a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 4 Arizona State that came down to the final points.
The day opened with Washington dropping a 4-1 match against UCLA, the No. 2 seed in the tourney and No. 2-ranked team in the NCAA. That sent UW into the contender's bracket, with one more loss ending its season. But the Huskies got rolling with a 5-0 win over No. 8 Oregon, and followed with another 5-0 sweep of No. 7 California, the day's first upset.
The only team forced to play four matches today in 90-degree heat at the University of Arizona's Jimenez Field, Washington had enough left in the tank to eliminate the Sun Devils in the night's final match. Senior Melanie Wade and freshman Shayne McPherson broke the 2-2 tie with the final win at No. 4, beating Arizona State's Pickrell/Rivera 17-21, 21-14, 15-12 on a kill by Wade that extended her Husky career for one more day.
"The atmosphere when Shayne and Mel won that was incredible," said second year Head Coach Jonathan Winder. "There were a lot of tears in their eyes knowing how hard they worked today."
The four teams left standing are the same as last year's inaugural Pac-12 tournament: No. 1 USC, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, and No. 7 Washington. The Trojans and Bruins have yet to lose and will play in the semifinals. The Huskies will play the Wildcats in an elimination match tomorrow at 10 a.m. The winner there will play the loser between USC and UCLA, and the winner of that match will play in the championship final at 1 p.m. All matches will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
Winder called his team's effort level "awesome" as UW had played 12 matches coming in then powered through four today. "There's not much else to say. The effort was incredible, the teamwork was incredible," said Winder. "It was a unique thing to have all five matches going at the same time because what they realized is they could continue to pull for each other while they were all going on. They became fantastic teammates today.
"They played really hard and played with focus and confidence. Every match this season we've gotten better and it's continued through this tournament. It's a snowball effect going down the mountain that we hope continues."
Overall today, Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones were 3-1 at the No. 1 spot, Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye were 3-1 at No. 2, Cassie Strickland and Carly DeHoog were 2-2 at No. 3, Wade and McPherson were 3-1 at No. 4, and Anna Crabtree and Lindsay Chalmers were also 3-1 in the No. 5 position.
"For four matches in a row you had five pairs that were competing really, really well," Winder said. "Nobody took a game off, they were all dialed in at the same time."
Match Four – vs. (4) Arizona State
After a few hours off to cool down and possibly grab a snack, the Dawgs were back in the sand for a fourth time today, playing Arizona State for the first time in program history. The Huskies got off to a strong start, winning the first set on courts 1, 2, and 5, but ASU would force a third set on the top-two, while Wade and McPherson would turn around their match at No. 4.
Crabtree and Chalmers would pick up their third straight victory in straight sets at No. 5, 21-14, 21-19 over Braun/Cross to give UW the first point of the match, but then ASU got the only other straight setter, winning 21-13, 21-14 at No. 3 over DeHoog and Strickland.
The final three matches all headed into third sets within a couple minutes of each other, with both teams needing to win two of the races to 15.
Jones and Scambray had taken the first set over the talented ASU team of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette, 21-17, but Arellano/Follette won the second set by the same score. The Huskies jumped out quickly in the third set, winning eight of the first 10 points to cause the Sun Devils to call a timeout. ASU fought back with a 4-0 run to make it 8-6, but the Dawgs got the next two points, and reached match point at 14-9 on a Scambray kill. The Devils hit into the net on the next point to end it, 15-9, and put the Huskies up 2-1.
Washington was two points away from clinching it at the No. 2 spot, but Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye came up just short to suffer their first loss of the day. They won the first set over Berridge/Okaro of ASU, 21-13, but ASU came back to win the next two sets, 21-18 and 15-13.
That left things to the No. 4 match, where McPherson and Wade had lost the first set, 17-21, but won set two, 21-14, against Cassidy Pickrell and Mia Rivera. The set was close throughout, with the Huskies keeping a slim lead towards the finish. McPherson had a crosscourt kill to make it 13-11, and then Wade hammered one to reach match point at 14-12. McPherson dug one up on the next rally, and Wade spiked it on the second contact and hit the back line to end it, 15-12.
Match Three – vs. (6) California
The Huskies had lost their first meeting with the Bears just two weeks ago in Berkeley, 1-4, but got some revenge today with a sweep and a 10-0 set sweep at that.
Jones and Scambray were quick and efficient at the top spot, as they were the first to score. They defeated Bryce Bark and Olivia Rodberg, 21-11, 21-13. The Huskies then got another win from Crabtree and Chalmers at the No. 5 spot, as they defeated a veteran duo of Teya Neff and Bridget Gustafson, 21-17, 21-16 to make it 2-0 Dawgs.
McPherson and Wade clinched the dual moments later, as they dominated their No. 4 match with Iya Lindahl and Madison Dueck, 21-13, 21-9. DeHoog and Strickland were 21-17, 21-18 winners at No. 3 and Schwan and Julye finished off the sweep with a 21-17, 21-19 win over Cal's Gaffney/Stepanof at No. 2.
Match Two – vs. (9) Oregon
Washington did not hang its head for very long after the loss to the Bruins. The Huskies knew the path ahead would be a long one but got to work and swept Oregon for the second time this season to get into the win column.
At the No. 1 spot, Jones and Scambray were 21-15, 21-15 winners over Oregon's top pair of Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle. Cassie Strickland and Carly DeHoog then closed out a 21-16, 21-13 win at No. 3 against Willow Johnson and Bridget Silberger-Franek.
Schwan and Julye rode the momentum of their UCLA win to a 21-12, 21-14 victory over Taylor Agost and August Raskie at No. 2 to earn the clinching point. McPherson and Wade then made it 4-0 with two tight 21-19 set wins over Page/Hall-Poirier. The only three setter came at No. 5. Crabtree and Chalmers dominated set one, 21-8, over Ronika Stone and Maggie Scott, but the Ducks got hot and pulled away in set two, 21-13. The Dawgs righted the ship in the third and finished the sweep with a 15-10 win.
Match One – vs. (2) UCLA
In what seems like a lifetime ago, the Huskies opened up against the Bruins. Second-ranked UCLA (28-3) got past the Huskies by a 4-1 count, the same score as their first meeting three weeks ago. Four of the five matches were very close, but UCLA got the win in three of those four.
Washington's point came at the same spot as in the first meeting between the teams. Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye outlasted Tan/Yeomans at the No. 2 spot, 21-14, 19-21, 15-8, to put the Dawgs on the board. The Huskies have not been swept this year despite five matches against top-10 competition.
Crabtree and Chalmers forced a third set at the No. 5 match, but the UCLA tandem of Justine/Simo pulled through for the win, 23-21, 15-21, 15-8.
The only team to beat Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray this season was UCLA's McNamara twins. The twins controlled the first set, 21-12, before Jones and Scambray started to find their footing. The second set was the tightest out of the four played between the teams this year, going into extra points, but the McNamaras pulled it out, 24-22, on their fourth set point chance.
Carly DeHoog and Cassie Strickland played well at No. 3 against Torrey Van Winden and Elise Zappia but couldn't get over the hump, falling 21-18, 21-17. McPherson and Wade had what would be their only loss of the day at No. 4, 21-10, 21-14, to Jordan Anderson and Izzy Carey.
