The Lipscomb Bison At A Glance
Lipscomb University is a liberal arts college located in Nashville, Tennessee. The athletics department made the jump from the NAIA ranks to NCAA Division I in 2001. The Bison enter the tournament with a 9-9-0 overall record, but have played a tough schedule and have won eight of their last 10 games after a 2-7-0 start to the season. That includes a pair of victories in the Atlantic Sun conference tournament this past weekend including avenging an earlier loss to Stetson in a 2-0 victory in the championship game. It marked the second-straight ASUN title for the Bison.
Lipscomb has played well against some of the country's top teams this season, including a 3-2 win over the tournament's No. 4 overall seed Louisville in mid-October. Earlier in the season, the Bison overcame a two-goal deficit, but lost 3-2 in overtime to No. 3-seeded Kentucky.
Leading the way for the Bison is Logan Paynter, who has tallied nine goals on the season including both in the ASUN championship game. In addition, he is the program's all-time leading scorer with 35 goals in four seasons. The senior has put together a special season after becoming the first player in ASUN history to be named the Player of the Year, the Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Tournament MVP.

Other UW opponents in the Top 50: Maryland (No. 12), Akron (No. 14, Denver (No. 17), Portland (No. 36) and Seattle U (No. 46).
Dominating Defense

The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 67 shots on goal through 19 matches (3.53 per match) and 158 shots overall (8.3 per match).
Over its last four matches, the defense has been incredible, surrendering just 16 total shots and only six on goal while posting four-straight shutouts. Overall, the Huskies have posted a 376-minute scoreless streak.
Against UCLA on Oct 25, Washington limited the high-power Bruins to just three total shots in the match–the fewest shots by a Pac-12 team in a conference match this year. The Huskies followed that up by limiting Oregon State to just four shots in their season finale–the fewest by the Beavers on the year.
Injuries Piling Up
The Huskies potentially could have their full lineup for just the second time all season when they open the NCAA Tournament on Thursday. Washington had been dealing with injuries throughout the year, but had really been hit hard over the last month. Overall, just four players have appeared in all 19 matches for the Huskies this year: seniors Corban Anderson and Kyle Coffee, and juniors John Magnus and Jaret Townsend.
Junior goalkeeper Saif Kerawala made his return to action on Friday after missing the previous seven matches due to an injury suffered against Cal (10/11). The Huskies' center back tandem of senior Quentin Pearson and freshman Ethan Bartlow both missed time recently due to concussions, though both have returned to the lineup within the last week. Also, junior Joey Parish was back in action after missing the past four matches. Sophomore defender Kasey French has missed time due to injury but may be back next week. Senior Scott Menzies missed his first game of the year on Friday due to illness.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington has been solid when scoring the first goal of the season, posting a 12-1-0 record when scoring the match's first goal. That includes wins in each of its last four games as the Huskies netted the opening goal in each. (The lone loss was the 3-2, 2 OT loss vs Stanford.) On the other hand, the Huskies are 0-6-0 when conceding the first goal.
It Takes Two...
Earlier this season, the Huskies posted a streak of scoring 2+ goals in eight-straight matches, dating back to last season. That matched the longest streak of games with 2+ goals since the 1991-92 season and ended up one shy of the program record of nine set during the 1981 season. Despite that streak coming to an end, Washington has scored 2+ goals in 14 matches this season, going 11-3-0 in those matches. The Huskies have scored two or more goals in six of the last seven matches including four-straight 2-0 wins.
That's Just Offensive, Man
The Washington offense has been impressive throughout the season, scoring 31 goals through its first 19 matches. The Huskies are averaging 1.63 goals per match thus far with a total of 14 Huskies recording at least a point this season.
Ten different players have found the back of the net for the Huskies with freshman Ethan Bartlow being the latest to score his first goal, capping the scoring vs Oregon State on Nov. 9. Scott Menzies has recorded five goals in his last seven matches to lead the team with nine goals on the season. Kyle Coffee is second on the team in points with 15 (4 goals, 7 assists), recording an assist in three of his last six games.
Last year, UW scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Menzies the Man!
Senior Scott Menzies has been on fire lately, recording his eighth and ninth goals of the season two weeks ago against UCLA and SDSU. Those goals gave him on in each of his last four matches, a streak which came to an end against Loyola-Chicago. He currently ranks second in the Pac-12 with nine goals, which are the most by a Husky since Brent Richards scored 10 during the 2011 season.
Menzies has done much of his damage of late from off the bench as his last five matches have been the only five he hasn't started this season. Earlier this year, he recorded a pair of goals against Gonzaga–the second multi-goal match of his career. In addition, Menzies has four match-winning goals this year, giving him nine in his career.
Grimsby's Growth
Redshirt sophomore Cole Grimsby has been impressive this season for the Huskies, starting all but one match at left back and playing 1,426 minutes–something that seemed impossible last season. Grimsby was low on the depth chart last year, appearing in just one match, playing the final minute in an early-season blowout. However, he has grown by leaps and bounds in the off-season and has been rewarded with the starting spot. Through 18 matches, he has recorded two assists and helped anchor a defense which has allowed just 20 goals this season.
In the Rankings ...
The Huskies got a big bump after their win over Oregon State, moving up to No. 17 in the final regular-season United Soccer Coaches rankings last week. Washington has been ranked as high as No. 3 and gone without votes, but is back in the Top 25 for the first time since the Sept. 17 rankings had the Huskies at No. 16 in the country.
Stopping the PKs

The Huskies hadn't allowed a PK goal by an opponent since UCLA converted two of three from the spot in Seattle on Oct. 4, 2015. Saif Kerawala has not allowed a PK in his collegiate career, stopping both attempts against him in three seasons. UW has converted all four attempts from the spot this year including two over a two-match span in mid-October in home games against Cal and Stanford.
