Washington Scores In Double Digits Again In 10-0 Win
February 10, 2018 | Softball
PEORIA, Ill. – The Huskies earned their third straight shutout victory Saturday afternoon, winning 10-0 over Western Illinois. Kirstyn Thomas and Julia DePonte each went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while Gabbie Plain allowed only one baserunner in her first collegiate start.
Plain allowed a single in the first inning, then retired the final 13 batters she faced, striking out six. She struck out two batters in the first and fourth innings and did not allow a ball out of the infield all game.
DePonte started the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, making it four games in a row with an RBI for the senior. A triple by Noelle Hee nestled next to the foul pole in the rightfield corner to score DePonte after that, giving the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.
Rachel Ogasawara started the second with a ten-pitch at-bat, earning a single. After Amirah Milloy singled, Sis Bates put another run on the board in the second with a single of her own. After Bates' RBI, Thomas cleared the bases again with a monster blast to centerfield, clearing the wall with ease and bouncing off the room of the dome to make it 6-0.
The Huskies were held off the board in the third inning but it took just one pitch in the fourth for Washington to put up another run. Taylor Van Zee sent a no-doubter to straight centerfield on the first pitch she saw leading off the inning. It was Van Zee's third home run of the season, all of them leading off innings.
DePonte's home run put two more runs on the board just three batters later. The Huskies would score once more in the inning, on an Ogasawara sacrifice fly, to reach an even ten runs.

Notes
- Thomas (2x3, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) now has three doubles and four home runs through the season's first four games. The last Husky to record three doubles in the first four games of the season was Casey Stangel in 2016, and the last to hit four homers in that time was Taylor Smith in 2011.
- The Huskies have scored ten or more runs in four straight games, the longest such streak since scoring ten or more in five games February 28-March 6, 2015.
- Ogasawara (2x2, R, RBI) has put up three RBI in two games this year, just one RBI off of her season total for 2017.
