Huskies Take Runner-Up At Queen’s Cup
April 08, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Huskies finished as the runner-up at the Queen's Cup tournament at Queen's Beach today in Honolulu, getting a big victory over 16th-ranked Loyola Marymount before dropping the championship match to third-ranked and host Hawaii. Washington now looks forward to hosting the Pac-12 North Invitational next weekend at Alki Beach.
"Our matches against LMU, we match up pretty well with them," said Head Coach Steve Whitaker. "We got them the first time down in Arizona. Yesterday they came out and played really well and it was the mirror image of what we did to them in Arizona. Today our girls were completely ready for LMU, and we were on fire, and ended up taking it, which set us up for Hawaii again."
"The first time against Hawaii we really played well. Today, it was not the hottest of days out here but I think we were a little worn out. We surprised them a bit the first go-round and the second time they came out with all guns blazing and they did a nice job against us. But overall I thought we got a lot better this weekend, and we're looking forward to Alki next week.
Vs. Loyola Marymount
In the semifinal match against LMU, the Huskies took the rubber match, having now won two of three meetings this year against the Lions. The difference from yesterday's 2-3 defeat came at the top spots, where Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner, and Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye, both won in straight sets today after dropping three-setters yesterday.
Anderson and Gardiner finished first, defeating Savannah Slattery and McKayla Ferris, 21-16, 21-16. Schwan and Julye then made it 2-0 at the No. 2 spot, beating Jessie Prichard and Sara Kovac, 21-14, 21-18.
Anna Crabtree and Natalie Robinson got the clinching point at No. 4 where they came back from a set down and won a dramatic second set before closing it out against Leiphardt/Culo, 13-21, 25-23, 15-10. Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson also got a seventh straight win at No. 3, 21-17, 19-21, 15-7, over Doud/Nederend.
Samantha Drechsel and Kara Bajema went three sets at No. 5 but fell a few points short, 13-21, 21-14, 15-11, against LMU's Simpson/Castellanos.
Vs. Hawaii
Facing the streaking Rainbow Wahine one more time, the Huskies kept it close in most sets but couldn't get over the hump.
For the second day in a row, Anderson and Gardiner went three sets with Hawaii's top tandem of Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht but lost in the third, 17-21, 21-12, 15-9.
Schwan and Julye dropped a 21-13, 21-15 decision to Martin and Monkhouse at No. 2. DeHoog and McPherson had their win streak snapped at No. 3, in a close 21-17, 21-18 loss to Kan and Weaver who they had beaten on Saturday.
At No. 4, Hawaii's Homayun/Ozee won 21-17, 21-15 over Crabtree and Robinson, and Drechsel and Bajema fell at No. 5, 21-18, 21-12, to Huddleston/Zalopany.
