Menzies Leads Huskies Past Gonzaga, 3-0
September 03, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SPOKANE, Wash. --- Senior Scott Menzies tallied a pair of goals as No. 3 Washington rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominant showing, cruising past Gonzaga 3-0 on Monday night at Lugar Field in Spokane.
ย
The Huskies (3-1-0) improve to 30-1-1 all-time against the Bulldogs (0-2-2), winning their last 10-straight against their neighbors to the East.
ย
Washington dominated in nearly every facet of the game, outshooting Gonzaga 23-4 and finding the back of the net three times. Menzies tallied two of those goals, giving him Washington's first brace since Handwalla Bwana tallied a pair at Oregon State last season. He ends the match with four goals through the Huskies four matches.
ย
Joey Parish got the Huskies on the board early, sending home a great cross by Corban Anderson in the eighth minute. Anderson won the ball on the far side and sent in a cross from 35 yards out right to the goal mouth. Parish was one of two Huskies in the box ready for the ball and was able to leap and get a foot on it, sending it into the net.
Washington continued to pepper the Gonzaga goal and finally got the second goal of the game in the 26th minute. After the Huskies won a free kick from 28 yards out, Grimsby sent the kick into the box. Quentin Pearson got a head on it but sent it toward the far post where Scott Menzies was able to blast it into the net.
Menzies added another in the 64th minute, tapping home a point-blank goal off the cross from Kasey French to cap the scoring.
Saif Kerawala picked up his third shutout of the season, needing to make just one save as the Huskies' defense was stout in front of him.
ย
The three-goal victory marked the Huskies' sixth-straight match with two or more goals dating back to last year, tying the longest stretch since the 1991-92 season when Washington recorded eight-straight matches with two or more goals. UW had recorded six matches with two-plus goals three other times since then including once early last season.
ย
Washington returns to action on Friday, hosting CSUN at Husky Soccer Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
