Washington Sweeps Portland 7-0 In Home Opener

SEATTLE --- The Washington women's tennis team took down Portland 7-0 in the team's home opener on Friday night at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies did not drop a set the entire match, winning all six singles matches as well as the three doubles matches, improving their record to 2-0 on the season.
The Huskies won the doubles point in a quick manner as the Dawgs showed dominance throughout the match, rarely giving Portland an opportunity to take a lead.
Sophomore Vanessa Wong and senior Kenadi Hance defeated Oberg/Soares in an efficient manner 6-1 to give the Huskies the first doubles victory of the night. Senior Stacey Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic improved their doubles record to 10-2 on the season after beating Luikic/Ramalle 6-1 to clinch the doubles point. The freshman tandem of Sedona Gallagher and Delara Zamani earned their first career dual-match victory by taking down Okazaki/Elenova 6-2.
In singles play, UW brought momentum from the doubles action as all six matches were led by a Husky after the first set.
Wong recorded the first singles point for the Huskies by beating Emily Soares 6-1, 6-1 to give the Dawgs a 2-0 lead in the match. Wong improved to 2-0 on the year in dual singles matches.
Gallagher extended the lead to 3-0 by beating Anna Oberg 6-3, 6-1. The victory was Gallagher's first career dual match singles win as a Husky.
Junior Natsuho Arakawa clinched the victory for the Huskies by beating Angela Schuster 6-0, 6-4. The victory for Arakawa improved her dual singles record to 2-0 on the season.
Junior Katarina Kopcalic continued the strong performance for the Dawgs as she took down Lourdes Ramalle 6-1, 6-0 for the fifth Husky point of the night.
Senior Kenadi Hance gave the Huskies their sixth point of the night by beating Marija Elenova 6-2, 6-3. Senior Stacey Fung ensured the Dawgs would have a clean sweep by taking down Portland's top player to close out thre night in Jelena Lukic, 6-3, 6-4.
The Huskies will next be in action on Sunday, Jan. 27 when the Huskies host Eastern Washington at 10 am and then Seattle University later in the day at 1 pm.
