Late Run Dooms Huskies in 64-62 Loss to Tulane
November 10, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Washington's Missy Peterson poured in a team-high 15 points and Mai-Loni Henson scored a tough basket to tie up the game with five seconds left, but a last-second layup would propel Tulane to a 64-62 win in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies (1-1) were in control much of the game scoring the opening bucket and leading by as many as 18 late in the third quarter. However, after shooting just 24 percent through the first 25 minutes of the contest, the Green Wave (2-0) suddenly couldn't missing, connecting on 14 of their last 19 shots in the game including each of their last five to pull out the victory.
Peterson was the lone Washington player in double-figures, scoring 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals without committing a turnover. JaQuaya Miller and Hailey Van Dyke each added eight points while Amber Melgoza and Mai-Loni Henson each contributed seven for the Huskies.
But the Tulane trio of Arsula Clark, Sierra Cheatham and Irina Parau combined to score 46 of Tulane's 64 points in the game. Clark had 13 of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter including scoring on a cutting layup with just under a second to play to give the Green Wave the win. Chetham would finish with 16 points while Parau added 12.
The Green Wave jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead as the Huskies connected on just one of their first 10 shots through the first five minutes of the contest. But Washington responded with a with a three from Ali Bamberger and a steal and layup by Rooks to cut the lead to one with 4:06 left in the first. The Huskies would eventually finish the first tied with Tulane at 14-14 as Mai-Loni Henson drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to knot it up.
The Huskies kept the momentum going from that quarter as Melgoza hit a pair of buckets to key a long 20-5 run which put Washington up 31-19 with 1:47 left. UW would lead 31-22 at the break.
Tulane closed the gap a bit more with a pair of free throws to open the third quarter but the Huskies still led by nine with 6:46 left. Washington kept the pressure up and slowly pulled away as Peterson scored the first seven points of a drawn-out 16-7 UW run over the next five minutes which gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game at 51-33 with 1:50 left in the third. After Tulane scored the final four points of the quarter, Washington headed to the fourth up 51-37.
The teams traded points through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter with Melgoza hitting one of two from the charity stripe with 4:59 left to make it a 58-44 game. But the combination of the Green Wave switching to a full-court press and the Huskies missing numerous open chances to score when they did break the press keyed a final 20-4 run by Tulane.
Despite struggling down the stretch, Washington still had time to pull out the game at the end. Tulane took its first lead of the game at 61-60 with 18 seconds left, the Huskies would turn the ball over and foul with 14 seconds left. The Green Wave hit one of two free throws, leaving the door open for Washington with 13 seconds to go. Out of the timeout, Mai-Loni Henson hit a tough runner to tie the game at 62-62 with five seconds remaining. But after a timeout, the Green Wave were able to get Clark free for a layup to seal the win.
After scoring just 22 points in the first half, the Green Wave tallied 27 points over the final 10 minutes including 20 over the final five minutes. The shots were not easy ones either with many contested shots finding the bottom of the net for the visitors.
Washington returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Weber State in its first annual Kids Day game at 10:00 a.m.
