Huskies Roll Past Cal State Bakersfield 80-49 in Season Opener
November 08, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – The University of Washington Huskies led wire-to-wire to take down the California State Bakersfield Roadrunners 80-49 -- in the largest margin of victory that this team has seen under the supervision of Head Coach Jody Wynn. Sophomore Haley Van Dyke came off the bench to net a career high 15-points to lead the field in scoring. She was one rebound shy of recording her first career double-double.
Twenty seconds into the Huskies first game of the season, Missy Petersen opened play with a three-pointer that lead to an early Bakersfield timeout. Washington allowed Cal State Bakersfield eight unanswered points to end the first quarter of play, but quickly shook off this slow start with a 9-0 run starting at the 8:54 mark in the second quarter. After holding the Roadrunners scoreless for six minutes in the second frame (from (9:10 - 3:29), the Huskies carried the momentum to reach a lead of as many as ten before half time.
In the third quarter of play, Washington blew it open, outscoring Cal State Bakersfield 25-to-10. Rita Pleskevich scored her first points as a Husky with a three-point bucket at the 9:39 mark in the quarter, she finished with four points and three rebounds. CSUB's I'Yanna Lops attempted to bring her team back in contention, scoring eight of the ten Roadrunner third quarter points to lead the field in scoring in the third frame.
With a lead of 25 points heading into the final quarter of the contest, the Huskies ultimately increased their lead to as many as 32. Washington forced 31 Cal State Bakersfield turnovers to score 34 points off Roadrunner mistakes. The Huskies had everything working for them as every Washington player that saw action, recorded points.
"We've been talking about, effort, and consistent effort on the defensive side of the ball, all year long, and our kids are dialed in there," said Wynn. "They're willing, they're playing their butts off and you know we'll make mistakes, but they're covering for each other for the most part. To be able to force as many turnovers as we did tonight and then turn that into offense was great. Last year we forced a few turnovers from time to time as well but we just weren't able to capitalize on the offensive side of the floor. For us to be able to turn them over 31 times and score 34 points off of those turnovers is a tribute to their effort."
Washington returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 10, hosting Tulane University in a non-conference game at 2:00 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena.
