ORLANDO, Fla. --- Washington senior Stacey Fung opened the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship with an impressive straight-set win over No. 14 Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse on Monday morning at the UTSA National Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
Fung, who is making her third-straight appearance in the NCAA Singles tournament, entered the match ranked No. 57, pulled off another impressive upset with the victory on Monday, improving to 3-1 in her last four matches against nationally-ranked players.
"I know how much it means to Stacey to put on the UW uniform and to be able to represent our program here and she does it the right way and competes so hard every time she goes out there," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "It was a great start to the tournament this morning and a great win. She was incredibly solid and stuck to her game plan throughout the match. Proud of her effort today and I know she's going to leave it all out there all week in singles and doubles."
Fung and Knutson held serve through the first two games before Fung broke serve en route to winning three-straight games to open up a 3-1 lead in the first set. After Knutson held serve to make it 3-2, Fung again won three-straight, winning the first set 6-2.
In the second, Fung broke out to a quick 4-1 lead before giving up a game midway through the set. She then closed out the match with back-to-back games to take the second 6-2.
Fung wins her first-round match for the third-straight season, advancing to the second round to face the winner of tonight's match between Melissa Lord of Stanford and Paola Delgado of Virginia Commonwealth. That match takes place at 4:00 pm ET tonight. The time for tomorrow's match has not been announced yet. Fung will also team up with freshman Nika Zupancic on Tuesday in the first round of the doubles championship.
