Washington Downs Army 4-0 in NCAA First Round Match
May 03, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- The University of Washington women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 victory over Army West Point in its NCAA Tournament First Round match on Friday night at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium on the UW campus.
The Huskies, who are hosting NCAA Tournament matches for the first time since 2004, improve to 20-4 on the season. It's also the first time Washington has won 20 or more matches since the 2004 season when the Huskies posted a 21-6 record and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals—tied for their best tournament run in program history.
"We're excited to get the win and get the first round behind us," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "I think the best thing about today was that the match didn't last too long, we got out of here in about an hour and a half, which is great in this tournament. We have to save our bodies a little bit. Tomorrow is going to be a big battle with Princeton. I thought the girls did really well. Our focus today was to be very focused and they did a really good job of that."
The Huskies got off to a quick start in the match, winning the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Kenadi Hance and junior Natsuho Arakawa were first off, beating Hannah Boubel and Sasha Inchauste 6-1. The No. 23-ranked tandem of senior Stacey Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic followed moments later with a 6-1 victory over Caroline Vincent and Stephanie Dolehide.
Sophomore Vanessa Wong and freshman Zoey Weil were up 5-3 when the doubles point was clinched.
The doubles wins for Hance and Zupancic were their 25th each on the season, moving them into a tie for seventh-most in a year in program history. The each need just two more to tie for the most all-time.
In singles play, Wong, who moved back into the national rankings this week at No. 92, was first off with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kirby Einck on court two. Zupancic followed a few minutes later with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Genevieve McCormick at No. 6. Freshman Sedona Gallagher then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at court five over Paola Bou.
Fung, ranked No. 57 in the latest ITA rankings, led 6-2, 4-0 on court one when the match ended while Arakawa led 6-4, 3-2 on court four with Kopcalic leading 6-3, 1-4 on court three.
"It's been great, the fact that we got to host," said Wong. "With a win today and getting to move on and playing a good Princeton team tomorrow, it's going to be a fun day. It's been a blast today, too!"
Washington improves to a perfect 7-0 in home NCAA Tournament matches all-time and hopes to make it a perfect 8-for-8 on Saturday. The Huskies face No. 34 Princeton in their second round match at 3:00 p.m. at Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Tigers pulled off the upset by beating No. 27 Northwestern 4-1 in the early match on Friday afternoon.
