ANN ARBOR, Mich. --- The Washington defense once again flexed its muscle and redshirt junior Kasey French scored his first collegiate goal as the Huskies beat Michigan 1-0 at UM Soccer Stadium on Sunday night.
Β
The Huskies remain perfect on the season, moving to 4-0-0 overall. The Wolverines suffered their second loss of the year, falling to 2-2-0. Washington's victory gave it a sweep over the two Big Ten schools from the Great Lakes State after the Huskies knocked off No. 16 Michigan State by an identical 1-0 score on Friday.
Β
After a relatively quiet first half, Washington broke the ice five minutes into the second as French got the Huskies on the board. The play began on the left side and was quickly switched by Imanol Rosales to the right where James Smith got the ball just inside the box on the right side. He quickly slid a pass to his right to an on-rushing French who blasted a shot the far corner for the goal.
Β
It was the first collegiate goal for the redshirt junior. Smith and Rosales each pick up their second assists of the year with Rosales assisting on both goals scored in Michigan this week.
Β
Washington's defense was outstanding throughout, holding the high-scoring Michigan offenseβwhich had scored three goals in each if its first three matches--to just 10 shots overall and five on goal.
Β
Bryce Logan made five savesβfour as Michigan poured on the pressure in the second half. His best was a leaping punch to clear a free kick over the bar in the 67th minute. Logan picked up back-to-back shutouts on the trip through Michigan, making eight saves.
"We always talk about the depth of this team and it showed this weekend," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "Two fantastic goals from two guys you wouldn't expect to see on the score sheet. It's exciting as it makes every other player hungry for it to be their game the next match.
Β
"It was another game where I felt like we started quite well, but didn't handle holding the lead as well as we should of," Clark added. "Credit to Michigan for pushing us to the very brink, but I'm very proud of our guys for holding on and battling for the victory."
Β
In the first half, neither team got a great scoring chance with the ball spending much of the period in midfield. Washington held a slight 3-1 shot advantage with the Husky defense looking strong. The Wolverines had a great chance building in the 40th minute, getting a turnover at midfield and breaking with numbers toward the UW goal. However, the Husky defense shut the break down just as it reached the box.
Β
Washington had a couple of chances including a great volley shot by Dylan Teves which went right of the goal andβlater in the periodβa hard header by Gio Miglietti which went right at the keeper.
Β
In the first minute of the second half, Michigan got a run from the left side all the way down to the end line. The UM player slide a cross right to a teammate in front of the net but he miss-hit his shot attempt and it went softly into Logan's hands.
Β
The Huskies return to action on Thursday, traveling to Southern California to face Cal State Northridge in a 7:00 p.m. match.
