Huskies Outlast Rain to Beat Hawaii, 5-1
January 15, 2020 | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Despite having to wait out a two-hour rain delay, the No. 14-ranked University of Washington women's tennis team beat Hawaii 5-1 in the Huskies' first road match of the season.
The Huskies, who improve to 4-0 with the victory, had to make some adjustments on the fly due to the weather as they played singles first and did not play doubles.
Sedona Gallagher got things going with another quick win, cruising to a quick 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 while Natsuho Arakawa followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 over No. 91 ranked Bojana Markovic. At No. 3, Katarina Kopcalic won a battle of ranked players as the No. 88 ranked Kopcalic downed No. 103 Satsuki Takamura 6-4, 6-1.
Zoey Weil improved to 4-0 on the dual season with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win at No. 6 while No. 102-ranked Vanessa Wong earned a win at No. 1 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
"Very proud of the team today," said UW Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "We adjusted very well to playing outdoors and in windy conditions. I thought we played disciplined and made really good decisions and executed well in the big moments. What I was most impressed by was the way we competed and the mental toughness we showed up and down the lineup."
"Today was a great day!," said Gallagher. "This was a super positive way to start our season; there were a lot of tight matches but the Huskies proved their mental toughness today. There is lots to look forward to: some beach time, and a matchup against Florida State on Friday!"
I'm so proud of how to team competed today," said Weil. "Hawaii is a really tough team and we all stayed super focused and took care of our business. I think it gives us all a ton of confidence heading into our next match."
Washington closes out the road trip with a big match Friday against No. 16 Florida State. The match is slated to begin at Noon PT.
"We are ready for our next challenge against FSU on Friday and looking forward to closing out our trip on a positive note."
