Huskies Suffer Tough 4-3 Loss to Princeton
January 25, 2020 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- Despite pulling off a pair of upsets in singles play, Washington dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Princeton at the ITA Kickoff Weekend match on Saturday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies (4-2) were not able to pull out the doubles point, but took back the lead in the match with a pair of wins in singles. The first of those was an impressive victory at No. 1 where Vanessa Wong was first off with a 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 24 Brianna Shvets. That was followed by another solid win by Sedona Gallagher at No. 4, who won 6-4, 6-4 to put the Huskies up 2-1 in the match.
Princeton would tie it back up again with a win at No. 6, but the Huskies went back on top as Natsuho Arakawa recorded Washington's second upset of the day. Arakawa fought back-and-forth with No. 66 Daria Frayman, winning the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. The two then stayed on serve through the first part of the second set before Arakawa went up a break at 6-5, then closed out the upset by winning the next game.
However, despite winning the first sets on courts three and five, the Huskies were not able to take those matches as Princeton came from behind for the victory.
Washington returns to the court on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., taking on Kentucky in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament at the NTC.
