TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 17th-ranked University of Washington men's golf team moved into first place following two rounds at the Seminole Intercollegiate on Saturday. The Dawgs finished at 1-over 577 (289-288) for a three-stroke lead over host Florida State. Washington was led by freshman Petr Hruby who is tied for 2nd at 3-under 141.
"Our guys played really well today, and we were led by our freshman Petr who had just three bogeys over 36 holes," said assistant coach Thomas Sutton. "He continues to get better every week and will have a chance to win tomorrow. I thought Henry had a great bounce back in his second round. He has a lot of firepower and it showed this afternoon. Additionally, Noah continues to play so solid and it's impressive to see how he grinds out a good score when needed. We'll be looking for a full team effort tomorrow to close out the win."
Hruby opened the day with an almost clean scorecard as he made par on his four holes before his one blemish of the round on the par 4 fifth hole. He followed with two birdies and 11 pars over the next 13 holes to finish his first round at 1-under. During his second 18 holes, Hruby added four more birdies and improved upon his round one score by a stroke coming in at 2-under for a day one total of 3-under 141 (71-70).
Making of the biggest improvements during Saturday's two rounds was senior Henry Lee who started the day with a 6-over 77 following some costly errors on the back end of his round. He quickly turned the page and carded a 4-under 68 in the afternoon thanks to a stellar round that featured three birdies and two eagles. Lee got to 1-under after 12 holes before making an eagle on the par 4 16th hole and the par 5 18th hole. He is now tied for 11th at 1-over 145 (77-68).
Junior Noah Woolsey also made moves during round two as he jumped 11 spots into a tie for 15th thanks to his 36-hole score of 2-over 146 (74-72). Woolsey carded seven birdies on the day and made a two-stroke improvement between round one and two.
Freshman Bo Peng will enter Sunday's final round tied for 30th at 5-over 149 (71-78) while sophomore Paul Margolis is tied for 45th at 7-over 151 (73-78). Competing as an individual was junior Jan Schenider who turned in a 6-over 150 (73-77) on Saturday.
Washington wraps up its second spring tournament Sunday morning and will tee off at 6:10 a.m. alongside Florida State and North Florida.
