March 07, 2020 | Beach Volleyball
LOS ANGELES – A pair of wins from the No. 5 spot showed Washington's depth but the Huskies dropped two 4-1 decisions today to top-20 opponents at the Pac-12 South Invitational.
The Dawgs first took on 11th-ranked California at Ocean Park in Santa Monica and then moved to Mapes Beach at UCLA and met 19th-ranked Stanford. Sophomore Callie Weber was 2-0 on the day at No. 5, getting one win with Scarlett Dahl and another with Avie Niece.
The Huskies (2-3) will look to bounce back tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Utah before wrapping up at 2 p.m. with second-ranked UCLA.
Match 1
The Huskies started the day bright and early at 8 a.m. in Santa Monica against 11th-ranked Cal. The Bears took the first two points, as Claire Hoffman and Shannon Crenshaw dropped a 21-17, 21-17 match at No. 4 against Radell/Miceletti and at No. 1, Kara Bajema and Shayne McPherson suffered their first loss, 21-14, 21-17 to Mirkovic/Lindahl.
Scarlett Dahl and Callie Weber kept the Huskies alive with a 21-14, 21-13 win at the No. 5 spot against Ribeiro/Luyties to make it 2-1. But Cal clinched at No. 3 with a lengthy first set going its way in a 25-23, 21-15 win over Emma Calle and Addie Picha.
At No. 2, Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen went extra points in the third set but fell just short to Polo/Schafer, falling 18-21, 21-11, 16-14.
Match 2
Moving venues to UCLA's Mapes Beach, the Huskies had another close contest with 19th-ranked Stanford, but the Cardinal came out ahead, 4-1.
Robinson and Loreen fell in straight sets at the No. 2 spot, 21-16, 21-15, to Stanford's Kriz/Ashkinos for the first point. Crenshaw teamed up with Dahl for the first time at the No. 4 position but they dropped a 21-14, 21-16 decision to Richardson/Sharp. The Huskies looked positioned to potentially turn things around but the Cardinal held off the rally by winning a long second set at the No. 1 spot, where Ekstrom/Villapando defeated Bajema and McPherson, 21-16, 23-21.
Moments later the Huskies got their second win of the day at the No. 5 position as Weber teamed with Avie Niece for a 23-21, 21-15 win over Red-Horse Mohl and Berty of Stanford.
At the No. 3 spot, Calle and Picha won the first set, 21-19, over Dailey/Smith of Stanford, but the Cardinal won the second set, 21-17, and then took the third set, 15-10, to close out the match.
