BANDON, ORE. – The No. 11 University of Washington men's golf team posted a 2-over 286 on the first day of the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday to finish fourth overall following the first 18 holes. The three-day tournament continues on Monday as Washington will tee off at 8:30 a.m. alongside Oregon State and Kansas.
"We kind of saw a little bit of everything today overall," said head coach Alan Murray. "We didn't have our best round today but Petr really responded well during his round, dug deep and showed a lot of maturity and grind for a freshman. This is a difficult course and you can't win it on the first day but you can lose it and I think we're in a good position, its now just about making sure we have a good round tomorrow. The guys feel better about the course now and if we play how we are capable of playing, we can give anyone a really good game."
The Huskies top finishers on day one were junior Noah Woolsey and senior Henry Lee as they are both tied for 10th at 1-under 70. Woolsey's round for the most part was very sound with just two blemishes on his scorecard. He opened by going two-under on the first three holes but followed with a bogey on his fourth. After seven pars and another birdie, his triple bogey on the par-4 second put him back to 1-over. The junior responded quickly though, adding two birdies and two pars to close the day at 1-under.
Lee also had a strong start as he pushed his score to three under by his seventh hole. Four more pars followed before his first error. Like Woolsey, Lee responded quickly adding two more birdies to two blemishes finishing with his 1-under. The pair are just five strokes behind first place heading into round two.
Freshman Bo Peng currently is tied for 20th with his 1-over 72 as he carded four birdies on the day. He's tied with junior Jan Schneider who is competing as an individual in this event. Schneider also turned in four birdies to four blemishes on the day.
Sitting in a tie for 43rd is freshman Petr Hruby who is at 3-over 74. The newcomer opened at 1-under over his first two holes but a double on his third and a bogey on his eighth pushed him back to two-over. He then added another double and single bogey before responded with a 2-under over his final six holes to finish at 3-over.
The UW official scorecard was rounded out by sophomore Paul Margolis who is tied for 78th at 6-over 77. Three other Huskies were competing as individuals down in Oregon as well. Sophomore Ranveer Grewal is tied for 43rd (3-over 74) alongside freshman Nate Anderson (3-over 74) while senior Shamu Bodhidatta is tied for 57th at 4-over 75.
