UW Goes 2-1 On Husky Invite Day One At Alki

SEATTLE - Alki Beach welcomed the Husky Beach Volleyball team back with open arms today for its first home matches in over two years. Under sunny and warm skies, the Huskies were able to sweep both Portland and Oregon for its second and third dual wins of the season. In their final dual, the Dawgs faced 15th-ranked Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine came out with the overall win, but the Huskies were able to grab a match from them at the No. 3 spot and take another to three sets.
To start off the day, UW swept the Portland Pilots 5-0. The only match that went to a third set was at the five spot, where Callie Weber and Cassidy Schilling were able to fight it out, winning 21-18, 12-21, 15-8.
Another close game came from the two seed where Avie Niece and Natalie Robinson were able to sneak out a win in the first set, 22-20 and then finish it in the second set, 21-11.
Shayne McPherson and Chloe Loreen at the one seed took control early and won with comfortable margins 21-12 and 21-17 against Portland's Hoeft and Wodke.
At the three spot, Scarlett Dahl and Kyra Petersen easily defeated Portland's Hughes and Nolan 21-11, 21-9 due to tough serving and minimal errors.
Finally, the pair of Ashley Shook and Hannah Yerex at the four seed, won in two sets, 21-18, 21-13.
Later in the afternoon the Dawgs took on Oregon, also winning 5-0. Shook and Yerex were in a tight match through all three sets. First they handled the Ducks 21-17, only to fall 21-23 in the second. In the third and final set they were able to pull ahead in the end due to some Duck errors, securing the 15-13 win.
Another close match came at the five spot where Weber and Schilling beat the Ducks in three sets, coming out strong winning 21-17. After that Oregon's Rotshtein and Plevin beat the Dawgs 16-21. In the final set, the Huskies had control from the beginning and were able to gain momentum for the 15-7 win.
Both the one and two spots defeated the Ducks in a quick two sets. McPherson and Loreen at the one, came out on top 21-9, 21-15. While Niece and Robinson at the two won 21-7, 21-11. At the third spot, Dahl and Peterson beat Oregon's Wetton and Schroeder 21-14, 21-15.
To finish off the day, the Huskies went up against 15th ranked Hawaii. The UW point came at the three seed where Dahl and Petersen were battling for every point. They came out hot, winning the first set 21-13. In the second set, Hawaii came back strong, defeating the Huskies 21-7. In the final set, Hawaii and UW were going back and forth until the Dawgs were able to pull away to seal the deal 16-14.
Weber and Schilling at the five spot also went to three sets. The pair came out aggressive in the first set beating Hawaii 21-16, however Hawaii pulled off a close win in the second set at 20-22. In the final set, the Dawgs weren't able to close the gap and lost 15-7.
At the one position, McPherson and Loreen lost to Hawaii's Napolean and Santer 21-19 and 21-16. The No. 2 duo, Niece and Robinson also lost in two sets, 21-10, 21-14.
Tomorrow, the Dawgs are back in the sand at Alki for tournament play. Hawaii earned the 1-seed and will play Portland at 10 a.m. Washington as the 2-seed will face Oregon the No. 3 at 11:15. The third-place match will be at 1 p.m. and the championship match at 2:15 p.m.
