November 25, 2022 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Washington women's basketball team (5-0) defeated Fordham (3-3) 71-62 in their first game at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon.
It was a total team effort as the Huskies maintained the lead after every quarter in their first road contest of the season during a physical game.
Defensively, Washington kept Fordham well below their season average shooting from the field, holding them to just 35.5% when the Rams had been averaging 45% going into the game.
The Huskies also out-rebounded the Rams 43-30. Trinity Oliver grabbed a season-high seven rebounds in the first half before finishing with a career-high 10, while Haley Van Dyke, Dalayah Daniels, and Jayda Noble all also recorded six or more rebounds.
Van Dyke tied her career high of five assists to go with the six rebounds, nine points, and three steals, and Noble recorded a season-high nine points to go with her six rebounds and three steals.
Three Huskies scored in double digits, with Emma Grothaus putting up 11 points in the first half. Grothaus was Washington's leading scorer with a season-high 21 points, while Hannah Stines recorded a career-high 13 points, and Daniels put up 12 points to go with her eight rebounds.
Grothaus and Stines combined for 34 of the Washington bench's 39 points, showing again how deep the Huskies are this season.
Washington played fast and strong throughout the game, finding each other on the offensive side while defensively making things difficult for Fordham. The Huskies played an unselfish game, hyping each other up and putting on a show for the families and friends in the stands who made the trip to Las Vegas to support.
Next Up: Washington remains in Las Vegas to take on Santa Clara in their second and final game of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PT in the Orleans Arena.
