Washington Drops Topsy Turvy Battle To No. 9 Maryland, 3-2
October 11, 2024 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington men's soccer team took the lead twice Friday night against No. 9 Maryland but were unable to hold the advantage, falling 3-2 at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Washington outshot the Terrapins 18-12 on the night, with both teams putting seven shots on frame.
Washington jumped ahead early in the 12th minute on Chris Meyers' first goal of the season, an exquisite free kick strike from a few yards outside the left side of the 18. Aided by a deflection off the wall, Meyers' rocket bent past the oustretched keep, bulging the side netting.
However, the Terrapins answered quickly as Max Rogers beat Jadon Bowton to his left to level the score at 1-1, with that score holding into the halftime break.
The Dawgs once again started fast out of the restart, jumping back ahead in the 50th minute as Cooper Burnell pounced on a rebound from Richie Aman, slotting his shot into the right side of goal to put UW back in front at 2-1.
Maryland, though, once again had a near immediate answer after a foul was called inside the 18 in the 51st minute. Leon Koehl converted from the spot, tying the match at two goals apiece.
With both sides chasing the decisive moment, it was the Terps that had the last say, scoring in the 74th minute to go ahead 3-2.
Washington had a last ditch effort to equalize with 14 seconds left on the clock after a foul outside the left side of the 18, but Maryland was able to clear, locking up the points.
Washington returns to action next Friday, facing off against Penn State in a 7 p.m. PT kick at Husky Soccer Stadium for the fourth annual DP Night. The match will be available for streaming through B1G+.
