No. 6 UCLA Hands Huskies First Loss

LOS ANGELES – Despite making some inroads late in the match, the Husky women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season against 6th-ranked UCLA today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Washington (1-1) dropped the ITA Kickoff Weekend match, 4-0, as the Bruins qualified for the National Team Indoor Championships.
The Bruins have one of the highest ranked doubles groups with two top-10 teams and a third in the top-40. UCLA jumped ahead on all three courts and earned wins on courts two and three to clinch the point.
In singles play, UCLA got its first win at No. 6, with Carina Syrtveit falling in straight sets to Olivia Center. Reece Carter had a tight first set with 38th-ranked Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, but dropped it, 5-7, and then lost a 1-6 second set to make it 3-0. UCLA clinched on court four, with 41st-ranked Kate Fakih beating McKenna Koenig, 6-3, 6-4.
Alexia Jacobs had turned things around in her match on court three against 53rd-ranked Elise Wagle, leading 2-0 in a third set after winning set two, 6-2. Erika Matsuda was also a game away from forcing a third at No. 1 singles, leading Kimmi Hance, 5-3, after losing the first set, 3-6. Sophie Luescher trailed Ahmani Guichard, 4-6, 3-5, at No. 5 singles.
The Huskies will now prep for their home opener, coming this Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 3 p.m. against Portland.
