Huskies Best Cougs 6-1 In Friday Afternoon Matchup
February 14, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington women's tennis team (4-1) pulled off an impressive 6-1 victory over Washington State Friday afternoon inside Nordstrom Tennis Center to hand the Cougars their third loss of the season.
Doubles play came down to the wire, as courts one and three split and the doubles point came down to Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher. The Washington State pair of Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki saved one match point but couldn't save another as UW clinched the doubles point.
Luescher rolled to a singles win, defeating Martina Ruvill 6-1, 6-4 to improve to 4-0 in singles.
Reece Carter clinched the match for Washington, besting the Cougars' Maxine Murphy 6-2, 6-4.
"Playing alongside my best friends through battles are the best moments," Carter said. "And the wins make these moments even sweeter."
Alexia Jacobs and McKenna Koenig also picked up wins for the Huskies, as Erika Matsuda fell in a battle on the top court to WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande in a 10-point tiebreak.
The Dawgs will host Arizona State Sunday at 11 a.m. in Nordstrom Tennis Center for their last home match until March 14 in Washington's Big Ten home opener.
