Washington Collects Four Ranked Wins In 4-1 Victory Over No. 26 UCLA
March 16, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 19 Huskies (10-2, 3-1 Big Ten) dropped the doubles point for the second time in as many matches, but it was the only point given up Sunday as Washington defeated No. 26 UCLA 4-1 inside Nordstrom Tennis Center.
This was UW's sixth all-time win over the Bruins and the first since the 2023 Pac-12 Championships.
No. 85 Reece Carter and Alexia Jacobs earned their second conference win as a doubles pair over the Bruins' No. 12 Elise Wagle and Kimmi Hance by a 6-3 margin.
Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda fell to the third-ranked doubles pair of Olivia Center and Kate Fakih, 6-2.
All three of the Bruins' doubles teams were slotted in the ITA rankings, as No. 90 Ahmani Guichard/Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer defeated McKenna Koenig and Carina Syrtveit 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for UCLA.
The Dawgs' top three singles courts each picked up ranked wins Sunday afternoon.
Alexia Jacobs finished off a 2-0 singles weekend by handing 52nd-ranked Kate Fakih her first loss of the year. Fakih was 9-0 coming into Sunday's match.
"After a close loss on Friday, I am so proud of how everyone showed up and fought today," Jacobs said. "I love every single one of these girls so much, and every match they give me the motivation to fight for the team."
Syrtveit earned the next singles victory for Washington on court six, besting UCLA's Olivia Center, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Carter and Matsuda finished off the afternoon for the Huskies, first with Matsuda defeating No. 100 Kimmi Hance in back-to-back 6-4 sets to put UW up 3-1.
After narrowly dropping a three-set battle on Friday to the 47th-ranked singles player in USC's Grace Piper, Carter defeated No. 16 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer on the top court in another three-setter to clinch the 4-1 victory for the Dawgs and snap Lutkemeyer's five-match winning streak.
"Bouncing back from Friday's match and securing a team win means a lot," Carter said. "We took that loss as a learning lesson and came out with the right mindset. Winning both doubles and singles felt great, but seeing the team respond the right way was even better."
Koenig was up a set on No. 67 Elise Wagle on the fourth singles court and midway through a second set tiebreak when Carter clinched the match.
Luescher counteracted a 1-6 loss in her first set with a 6-4 second to force a third. The senior was down 2-1 before her match was abandoned.
The Huskies are set for their second Big Ten road trip, with the first stop at Northwestern on Saturday, March 22. Washington will then play Illinois on Monday, March 24 before returning to Seattle for back-to-back home weekends.
