March 24, 2025 | Women's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. β The Washington women's tennis team (12-2, 5-1 Big Ten) earned another 4-1 victory Monday, this time at No. 45 Illinois inside Atkins Tennis Center.
The Fighting Illini took an early lead by virtue of winning the doubles point. The first two doubles matches to be completed split results, with the Huskies winning on the top court and falling on court three.
Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher took No. 2 doubles to a tiebreak after going down to Illinois' Martinez/Xu 6-5. The Husky pair jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak, but the Illini countered with a run of their own, taking the match 7-6 (5).
Carina Syrtveit was the first Husky to earn a singles win, improving to 3-1 on the weekend including 2-0 in singles play. Monday marked her 10th dual win of the season as she defeated Kasia Treiber, 6-4, 6-3.
Alexia Jacobs went undefeated on the weekend (4-0), winning Monday alongside Reece Carter on No. 1 doubles and picking up her eighth singles win, taking down Violeta Martinez, 7-5, 6-4.
Carter upped the Washington lead to 3-1 with a come-from-behind win on the Huskies' top court. The 84th-ranked junior went down 4-6 in her first set but battled back to win two straight, 6-4 and 6-3.
"Proud of the team for handling adversity all trip long," Carter said. "Road wins are never easy, but we showed up, played for each other, and got it done."
Luescher sealed the deal with a gritty comeback of her own, besting the Illini's Kida Ferrari in three sets to clinch for the Dawgs. The senior lost her first set before winning a 6-2 second.
Ferrari pushed out to a 5-3 advantage in the third set before Luescher poured in four straight to clinch a 4-1 Husky victory.
"Today was for the team," Luescher said. "They gave me the will and energy to keep fighting for every point. I knew I had to leave it all out on the court and no matter the outcome, I could walk off the court knowing I gave everything I had for this incredible team."
Matsuda's and McKenna Koenig's matches were abandoned in second sets when Luescher clinched the match.
Washington returns to Seattle for an extended home stretch, beginning with Purdue on Friday, March 28 and Indiana on Sunday, March 30. The Huskies then will host a non-conference match with Pepperdine on Friday, April 4 before welcoming the Oregon Ducks on the 5th.
