March 07, 2025 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 21 Washington women's tennis team (8-1) earned its first conference win of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Maryland 4-0 in College Park.
The Huskies won the doubles point for the sixth straight match, with Carina Syrtveit and McKenna Koenig notching a 6-2 win on No. 3 doubles over Maryland's Gagoshidze and Orlinska.
The 85th-ranked Reece Carter and Alexia Jacobs earned their fifth win as a pair, taking down Liu/Kovacevic 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Carter and Erika Matsuda swapped the top two spots of the singles lineup, as Matsuda earned her first win at No. 2 singles, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead after besting Kovacevic 6-4, 6-1.
Sophie Luescher remains undefeated at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-4, 6-3 win as it all came down to Jacobs, who clinched the match on court three. The sophomore defeated Danielle Hack, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
"Really proud of the team today and for getting a well earned first Big Ten win on the road," Head Coach Robin Stephenson said. "I was very impressed by Maryland and I thought that the match was a high level the whole way through. They made us earn everything and I was very impressed with our poise and toughness in the big moments. The margins are so small in every match and our team knows that, and they are fighting for each other and competing better with every match. It's been fun to see our growth over the past few weeks and the hard work that's paying off in these matches. It was a complete team effort once again today, and now we are looking forward to our next opportunity at Rutgers on Sunday."
The Dawgs will head to Rutgers for their first ever matchup with the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, March 9. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. PT.
