The Dual: UW-California Rivalry Returns This Saturday
April 22, 2025 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
The greatest rowing rivalry in the west returns this Saturday morning as the Washington men's and women's rowing teams take on California in The Dual, starting at 10:00 a.m. on Montlake Cut.
The 11 men's and women's races pit two of the nation's rowing powerhouses against one another. In the featured races, the women's varsity eights compete for the Simpson Cup, and the men's varsity crews race for the Schoch Cup.
Racing begins at 10:00 a.m. Fans are encouraged to watch from the finish line area at the west end of Montlake Cut on the north shore, behind the UW Medical Center. The fan zone opens at 9:00 a.m., and burgers from Dick's Drive-In and beverages San Juan Seltzers will be available for purchase. Fans who are unable to attended can watch a live video production on Big Ten Plus (subscription) and follow live timing on HereNow.com.
The Dual, first contested by the men in 1903 and by the women in 1977, is the oldest and most significant collegiate rowing rivalry in the western United States. It's also nearly unique in that, each year, both the men's and women's teams compete on the same race course on the same day – rare for a collegiate dual.
This year, according to the most recent polls (IRCA men's and CRCA women's, April 22 polls), The Dual pits the No. 1-ranked UW men vs. No. 2 Cal, while on the women's side, the Huskies are ranked No. 3, and Cal is No. 9.
